Job Overview

The Failure Analysis & Component Test Engineer will perform failure analysis of electrical and mechanical failures in electronic assemblies including solder joint reliability, failures due to shock and vibration as well as thermal cycling, stress and strain across all voltage and load operating conditions, including transient fault conditions in support of telecommunications, datacenter, and industrial applications. This position will be expected to demonstrate leadership globally, working with the team in Shanghai and as Lead Customer Interface on Product Failure issues through all phases of the Product lifecycle.

Additional support and leadership as the business interface in support of Component Failures in assessing component risk, field liability and supplier improvements (root cause/corrective action).

Responsibilities
  • Analyze electrical / mechanical failures associated with power supply assemblies and components to determine root causes and recommend corrective actions
  • Perform accelerated tests to assess field risk due to product failures
  • Collaborate with development and component engineers to set up de‑rating guidelines and understand physics of failure of new technologies
  • Work with electronic component and piece part fabricators to ensure mechanical robustness of part which may include strain gauge analysis and mechanical stress simulations
  • Conduct Design for Manufacturability Reviews on new product introduction projects and identify components at risk of mechanical stress/strain and make recommendations for mitigating risk
  • Utilize analytical laboratory tools such as Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM)/Energy Dispersive X‑Ray (EDX), Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR), X‑Ray Fluorescence (XRF), tensile tester, strain gauge measurement system, cross‑section equipment, chemical decap, optical microscopes, ionic contamination analyzer and live X‑ray
  • Instruct laboratory technicians to properly set up and execute failure analysis tests
  • Prepare detailed customer failure analysis reports documenting product test data with pass/fail criteria, electrical and mechanical data
  • Report all non‑conformances to the appropriate Quality and Technology teams
  • Support customer requests for information/test reports and assure timely and accurate completion of all action items
  • Responsible for creating documentation pertaining to the Component Reliability, De‑Rating and Component Qualification Tests
  • Provide technical leadership to personnel supporting the assigned project
  • Provide timely communications on product failures
  • Participate as a presenter or reviewer in Failure Reviews (Customer and Supplier), technical and program reviews
  • Assure proper documentation of technical data generated for the assigned projects and/or tasks consistent with engineering policies and procedures
Basic Qualifications
  • Bachelor of Science Degree in Electrical Engineering / Power Electronics, or Physics from an accredited university or college
  • Minimum of 3 years of engineering experience in Failure Analysis/Reliability Engineering
Desired Characteristics
  • Master of Science Degree in Electrical Engineering / Power Electronics, Material Science, Physics
  • PC proficiency - Proficient in Microsoft Office applications, including Word, Excel, PowerPoint etc.
  • Proficient in Reliability Prediction tools (Reliasoft, Weibull Plot), Finite Element Analysis Tools (ANSYS);
