Overview
The City of Plantation Utilities department seeks a Utilities Plant Operator (Class C, B, or
A) for the Water Division. This non‑exempt, skilled position involves operating a water plant on an assigned shift. The role requires independent judgment in adjusting machinery, equipment, and controls in accordance with established procedures and standards.
- Operate water plant and perform routine maintenance and servicing of equipment and machinery.
- Conduct chemical analysis, inspect plant equipment, and take water samples at various stages of the treatment process.
- Adjust control devices based on laboratory results to ensure effective treatment.
- Monitor and adjust plant equipment, recorders, and meters as required.
- Perform preventive maintenance, cleaning, and painting of equipment, and assist mechanics with major repairs and installations.
- Carry out general building maintenance and custodial work at the plant.
- Instruct new operators on standard operating procedures.
- Maintain logs on process adjustments and prepare periodic summary reports of operations.
- Work safely and efficiently, following all safety practices and emergency procedures.
- Report unusual or major problems to a supervisor or lead operator as necessary.
- Note:
This position does not have final procurement authority.
- Minimum of a Class "C" Operator License (or higher) from the Florida Department of Environmental Protection.
- Knowledge of the general operation principles of electrical and mechanical equipment in a water treatment plant.
- Familiarity with mechanical maintenance and lubrication requirements of plant equipment.
- Understanding of occupational hazards of the trade and proper use of safety practices.
- Ability to make minor repairs to operated equipment.
- Accurate following of routine operating and recording procedures.
- Ability to detect faulty operating characteristics and institute remedial action.
- Ability to maintain detailed routine operating records.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with City employees, department officials, and the general public.
- High school diploma or vocational school graduation with supplemental college‑level courses in water treatment or pollution control.
- Experience in operating electrical and mechanical equipment and machinery similar to those used in a water treatment plant.
Class A: $59,043.86 – $
Class B: $55,440.24 – $97,796.59
Class C: $52,056.57 – $91,827.78
This position is a designated "Response" classification in the City’s Emergency Operations Plan and will require the employee to work for declared emergencies. Attendance at National Incident Management System (NIMS) training at the appropriate level is mandatory.
