Position: Engineering Surveyor (Machine Control)

We are KierBAM, a Joint Venture partnership between Kier and BAM UK & Ireland, currently delivering the redevelopment project at a Royal Navy site located in Plymouth. We are seeking an Engineering Surveyor (Machine Control) to support survey machine‑controlled plant and construction activities.

Security Clearance

Due to the site being a high‑security military naval base, a BPSS level of security clearance is required. The checks can take up to eight weeks.

Only candidates holding EU, NATO, 5 Eyes, or MISWG member passports and who have been UK residents for the last five years may be considered.

Role

In this role as Engineering Surveyor (Machine Control), you will be working in a live MOD facility. Your day‑to‑day tasks include:

  • Check and maintain survey control networks
  • Support machine control application for excavation, demolition and drilling operations
  • Check design and create models for machine control
  • Complete checking of machine control operations
  • Provide check reports and as‑built documentation through laser scanning and point‑cloud modelling
  • Ensure survey data is collected and recorded accurately, following project QA/QC standards; operate survey equipment to the highest precision within a civil engineering environment
  • Support engineers with surveying activities to ensure consistent approaches to surveying and engineering
  • Coordinate with site engineers, supervisors and subcontractors to align construction programme and survey operations
  • Assist with the implementation of quality control procedures, particularly in accordance with QC1 requirements, maintaining the highest standards of traceability, tolerances and reporting
  • Manage and archive survey files and records to support project compliance and audits, using the Projects Document Management system
  • Attend daily briefings and provide updates on survey progress and issues
  • Ensure all surveying works are carried out in accordance with health, safety and environmental regulations
  • Support other surveying work packages as required
  • Perform additional tasks as directed by the Company, with training and support provided
Essential Qualifications
  • Degree, diploma or relevant qualification in Civil Engineering, Surveying or Construction
  • Experience in surveying and construction industries
  • Considerable years of experience in a similar surveying position on a civil engineering project
  • Experience with Leica Machine Control equipment
  • Experience with surveying equipment: total stations, GPS/GNSS and laser scanners
  • Proficiency in survey data processing software:
    AutoCAD Civil 3D, Leica Infinity, Leica Cyclone and Leica 3DR
  • Understanding of QC1 procedures and quality documentation in a civil engineering context
  • Strong attention to detail and organisational skills
  • Excellent communication and teamwork abilities
  • CSCS Card and relevant site safety qualifications
  • Member of the Cinst

    CES (or technical member working towards full membership), or another relevant body
  • Ability to work under pressure and meet tight deadlines
  • Availability to work on a 7/3/7/4 shift pattern as per programme needs
  • Site‑based role
Desirable Qualifications
  • Experience working on major infrastructure or utilities projects (e.g. highways, rail, water, energy, nuclear)
  • Knowledge of BIM or digital construction processes
  • First aid and additional safety training certifications
