As a Health & Safety Specialist you will ensure compliance with all federal, state, and refinery regulations, policies, and procedures concerning health, safety, and fire protection through education, training, and auditing. You will administer the refinery safety program, with policy and procedural approvals, and implement, manage, and recommend improvements to optimize safety results.
Responsibilities- Ensure compliance with all applicable governmental and industry safety standards.
- Interface with refinery employees and assist with Health and Safety needs and education.
- Conduct OSHA compliance audits and safety field audits for assigned area (e.g., safe work permit, lockout/tagout, fall protection).
- Work with on‑site personnel to solve and implement corrections of safety problems and improve safety effectiveness.
- Assist refinery personnel with work permit issuance.
- Participate in department “on‑call” responsibilities for all Health and Safety matters.
- Participate in recommended professional development activities and training at the discretion of management.
- Receive and distribute Safety Data Sheets and update program manuals as needed.
- Maintain and assure proper operation of gas testing equipment/H2S monitors.
- Inspect and perform atmospheric testing for safe work permits and ensure compliance for confined space entries and hot work, as needed for maintenance, turnaround, or construction work.
- Conduct routine technical assignments under the guidance of more experienced personnel.
- Complete short‑term Health and Safety projects.
- Provide technical assistance to the refinery and assigned area on safety/fire protection issues.
- Conduct or assist in incident/injury/loss reporting.
- Conduct contractor orientation as needed.
- Conduct assessments on GSP’s for contractors and Valero personnel.
- Assist contractors with safety during turnarounds and plant expansion programs.
- Provide industrial hygiene support and expertise to the refinery.
- Attend and participate in team meetings involving all Process Safety Management (PSM) matters and incident investigations.
- Conduct routine and non‑routine inspections and work site assessments.
Able and willing to work on‑site, in‑person at the Valero Port Arthur Refinery.
High School diploma or GED required.
3 years of refinery/petrochemical safety permitting experience required.
Preferred:
Bachelor’s degree in Safety or related field, Emergency Response training, Incident Command training.
