Civil Engineering, Environmental Engineer
Job Description
Join a team dedicated to restoring the rugged landscapes of West Virginia and Pennsylvania by transforming hazardous Abandoned Mine Lands into safe, sustainable environments. You will play a vital role in high-stakes engineering solutions that eliminate public safety risks, restore local watersheds, and revitalize community land for future generations. As a Civil 3D expert, you will excel by turning complex survey data into precise, constructible grading plans, cross sections, and profiles that define the project’s footprint.
Success in this role means delivering error‑free design packages that seamlessly balance earthwork volumes while navigating the unique topographical challenges of the Appalachian region.
- Advanced Surface Modeling & Grading:
Build complex 3D surfaces in Civil 3D to design stable slopes for highwall abatement, refuse pile regrading, and landslide repairs. - Earthwork Optimization:
Perform precise cut‑and‑fill volume calculations to balance onsite materials, minimizing the need for costly "waste" or "borrow" hauls. - Hydrologic & Hydraulic Design:
Design drainage channels, culverts, and sediment ponds using Pipe Networks to manage acid mine drainage and storm runoff. - Erosion & Sediment (E&S) Control:
Develop comprehensive E&S plans and narratives that meet specific WVDEP or PA DEP regulatory standards for reclamation permits. - Site Integration:
Convert raw topographic survey data and LIDAR into functional base maps, ensuring all site features such as mine portals or seeps, are accurately represented and addressed in the design. - Plan Set Production:
Independently manage the assembly of full construction document packages, including plan and profile sheets, cross‑sections, and detail sheets.
- An associate’s degree in Drafting, Engineering Technology, or a related field (or equivalent hands‑on experience) with a strong foundation in civil/site design.
- 3–10 years of civil CAD production experience supporting land development and site design projects.
- The ability to read, interpret, and apply site plans, grading concepts, engineering markups, and redlines accurately.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills and the ability to collaborate effectively with engineers and project team members.
- Experience preparing detailed site grading and earthwork drawings, including layouts, slope transitions, profiles, and cross‑sections.
- Experience developing and managing grading surfaces to produce accurate and constructible site designs with proper drainage.
- Proficiency using Data Shortcuts and Xrefs, along with applying object and label styles to maintain company drafting standards.
- Experience updating drawings based on redlines, markups, and evolving design changes while supporting permitting packages for local and state agencies.
- The ability to coordinate on constructability challenges, provide general project support, and consistently follow Atlas health and safety policies and procedures.
