Job Overview
As a Corrections Construction Equipment Operator Instructor for the State Correctional Institution (SCI) at Coal Township, you lead real‑world construction and maintenance projects. Each day provides opportunities to teach safe equipment operation and support critical facility needs, helping inmates develop practical skills for life beyond correctional facilities.
Key Responsibilities- Lead and supervise inmate work crews in construction, excavation, and maintenance tasks.
- Train inmates in the safe and correct use of heavy machinery such as backhoes, loaders, and excavators.
- Enforce all safety rules, tool procedures, and institutional policies.
- Plan, assign, and review work while monitoring progress and quality.
- Perform and teach basic preventative maintenance on assigned equipment.
- Complete inmate instruction records, evaluations, time records, and payroll forms.
- Full‑time, 40 hours per week (7:30 AM – 3:30 PM, Monday‑Friday).
- Eligible for full retirement benefits at age 50 or 55.
- Starting annual salary $51,868 for new Commonwealth employees.
- Telework is not available for this position.
- Completion of an approved apprenticeship in heavy‑equipment operation or an equivalent combination of experience and training, including at least one year of journeyman‑level work.
- Valid Pennsylvania motor‑vehicle operator’s license.
- Must meet Pennsylvania residency requirements.
- Successful completion of basic training in Elizabethtown, PA.
- Must pass a background investigation and meet CJIS compliance requirements.
- Must be able to perform essential job functions.
