One post-doctoral position is available at the Laboratory of Innate Immunity and Microbial Pathogenesis () affiliated to the Ribeirão Preto Medical School of the University of São Paulo (FMRP-USP), São Paulo State, Brazil. The opportunity is for a highly motivated Post-doctoral individual to join the lab’s team under the leadership of Dr. Dario S. Zamboni (PI). São Paulo Research Foundation – FAPESP funds the fellowship under the grant nº 2020/04964-8, related to the “Acordos de Cooperação / COVID-19 / COVID-19 - Projeto de Pesquisa – Regular”. Successful applicants can be funded for up to 2 years.
Applicants must be exceptionally motivated, innovative and should be able to work independently and with a collaborative team setting. The ideal candidate must have a Ph.D. degree and background in the fields of Molecular Biology, Microbiology or Immunology. Prior experience in techniques such as Molecular Biology and/or Immunology are highly recommended.
About the project: COVID-19 is caused by the SARS-CoV-2 and has become a worldwide health concern. In its most severe forms, COVID-19 manifests itself in the form of fever, cough, fatigue, dyspnea, headache and can progress to respiratory distress syndrome and death. The most severe cases are characterized by an intense inflammatory process, with important recruitment of classically activated neutrophils and macrophages. There are also high concentrations of inflammatory cytokines, such as IL-1β, which is produced in a manner dependent on the inflammasome, a complex of intracellular proteins that promotes inflammatory processes. The presence of high concentrations of IL-1β in patients suggests an important participation of the inflammasome in the pathogenesis of COVID-19. Thus, we intend to evaluate the inflammasome activation in response to SARS-CoV-2 infection in cell cultures and in clinical material obtained from COVID-19 patients. We will also monitor the inflammasome activation in a prospective study with samples of patients hospitalized for SARS-CoV-2 at HC-FMRP. The development of the project can directly contribute to the understanding of the pathophysiology of COVID-19, in addition to providing a mechanistic basis for new treatment for COVID-19 patients.

Requirements: Applicants must have a Ph.D. in Microbiologia/Virologia, Imunologia, Molecular Biology or related fields. Preference will be given to individuals with proven experience in these fields. The selected candidate will receive a Post-Doctoral Fellowship from FAPESP (explicit details are at ).

How to apply: Interested individuals should contact Prof. Dario S. Zamboni () using “PostDoc_ COVID19_FAPESP” as the subject of the email. Documents requested:
1) A letter of intent stating the candidate motivations and why he/she qualify for the position;
2) A short version of Curriculum Vitae containing a list of publications and previous professional experiences;
3) A letter of recommendation from previous mentors/supervisors of the applicant.
Candidates meeting the requirements will be contacted and interviewed (in-person or via Skype).
This opportunity is open to candidates of any nationalities. The selected candidate will receive a FAPESP’s Post-Doctoral fellowship in the amount of R$ 7,373.10 monthly and a research contingency fund, equivalent to 15% of the annual value of the fellowship which should be spent in items directly related to the research activity.
