School Resource Officer (SRO)
REPORTS TO: Chief of Police
EXEMPT STATUS: Non-Exempt

BASIC FUNCTION:
- Provide basic police functions within the jurisdiction of the Madison County Schools as described in KRS 15.310(9).
- School Resource Officer (SRO) - Means a sworn law enforcement officer who has specialized training to work with youth at a school site. KRS 158.441(2)(a)(1)
REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES:
- Providing a visible deterrent to criminal activity on school property.
- Promoting a safe and secure environment on school property.
- Responding to criminal activity and disturbances on school property.
- Investigating crimes occurring within their assigned school property or stemming from incidents occurring at the school property.
- Participate and collaborate in the development of the school's crime prevention programs, if requested and subject to departmental approval.
- Being a positive role model to the students.
- Supporting faculty and staff, when requested, and when circumstances necessitate a law enforcement response.
- SROs will not enforce administrative or disciplinary rules enacted by the school district, individual schools, administrators or faculty. This includes, but is not limited to:
- Failure to follow classroom rules or disrupting class.
- Dress code violations.
- Failure to carry a hall-pass or other appropriate identification.
- Failure to participate in, or being unprepared for, class.
- Truancy, excessive tardiness, or cutting class.
- Possession or use of cell phones, or other electronic devices.
- Possession of other inappropriate personal items.
- Public displays of affection or other inappropriate touching.
- Verbal altercations
KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES:
KNOWLEDGE OF:
- Kentucky criminal law
- Law enforcement procedures
- School safety and security regulations.
ABILITY TO:
- Situational analysis:
Ability to analyze situations quickly and objectively to determine the appropriate course of action. - Communication:
Ability to communicate effectively with diverse populations. - Physical demands:
Ability to work in high stress maintaining physical stamina and perform defensive tactics. - Decision making:
Ability to use common sense, training and experience in legal, ethical and moral decisions. - Technical proficiency:
Ability to operate police vehicle, computers, firearms and specialized equipment following department policies.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
- Work is performed while standing, sitting and/or walking
- Requires the ability to communicate effectively using speech, vision and hearing
- Requires the use of hands for simple grasping and fine manipulations
- Requires bending, squatting, crawling, climbing, reaching
- Requires the ability to lift, carry, push or pull light weights
- Applicants must be able to kneel and recover from a kneeling position while correctly handling a firearm.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
- High School Diploma or GED
- Peace Officer Professional Standards (POPS) Certified
- At least 3 years as a Law Enforcement Officer in Kentucky (preferred)
- SRO Certified (preferred)
SELECTION AND ASSIGNMENT:
The selection process for SROs shall be in accordance with the current department policy for assignments. The assignment to schools will be based on the needs of the department and the school district. SROs are assigned to a designated supervising officer of the agency.
Position Type: Full-Time
Salary: $30.20 to $40.91 Per Hour
