Facility

EES Coke Operations is a facility in River Rouge, MI on Zug Island. The plant produces coke from various types of coal blends and is then used as fuel in the blast furnaces at the steel mill. This is not a position with Detroit Edison, it's a position with EES Coke Battery, a subsidiary of DTE Energy.

Job Summary

Location:

River Rouge, MI

Hourly rate: $37.49, Pay range: $36.15 – $38.83

Signing bonus: $2,500 and an additional $2,500 after 1,040 hours probation, plus quarterly bonuses up to $7,500 per year based on quality and production.

This role works a 12-hour rotating shift in a 4-week rotation: 14 days of work and 7 days off within each 4-week cycle.

  • Maintains various types of machinery in the coke making process
  • Participates in safety activities to meet or exceed organizational goals and expectations
  • Maintains interpersonal relationships with individuals both external and internal to the organization
  • Actively develops and maintains a culture of professionalism
  • Follows all rules, policies, or expectations
  • Ensures environmental compliance
  • Performs all other related duties as assigned
Qualifications
  • A high school diploma or GED
  • A valid driver's license
  • 1-3 years of heavy industrial experience providing the following:
    • Proficient in precision cutting with burning torch
    • Ability to arc weld (SMAW) in 2F & 3F positions
    • Basic pipe threading and fitting skills
    • Basic rigging knowledge and experience
    • Basic print reading abilities
    • Strong safety experience
    • Ability to work in a team-oriented atmosphere
    • Demonstrated capability to achieve results through people, technology, and processing equipment
    • Good knowledge of the assigned area(s) of responsibility
    • Ability to function within a matrix organization with dual reporting
    • Ability to develop and maintain productive relationships with both functional and business leaders
    • Goal oriented
    • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with supervisor, coworkers, and management
    • Must possess and maintain a valid driver’s license
Additional Qualifications

The physical demands include consistent standing, walking, lifting, climbing, confined space work, communication, manual dexterity, and visual acuity requirements. Employees may be exposed to weather conditions, vibration, fumes, heat, cold, heights, and noise. PPE such as respirators, fire‑retardant clothing, SCBA, harness/lifeline, and ear protection may be required.

  • Sit, stand, or walk for a minimum of 8‑hour shifts, including long distances, stairs, and uneven ground
  • Frequently lift objects up to 70 pounds, carry up to 50 pounds, push or pull up to 100 pounds
  • Frequently climb, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, or occasionally crawl
  • Enter and work in confined spaces
  • Handle and feel with hands, fingers, reaching extensively
  • Operate controls, drive occasionally, use fine hand tools
  • Visual requirements for close, color, distance, peripheral, depth, focus
  • Must be clean shaven (except mustaches above lower lip that do not affect respirator seal)

Frequently exposed to outside weather conditions, moving mechanical parts, high temperatures, vibration, fumes or airborne particles requiring PPE. Exposed to heights requiring fall protection. Noise level may exceed threshold requiring PPE.
