Position Title: Skills Specialist

Reports To: Youth Sports Supervisor

Division: Youth Sports

Grade Level: Starting Wage: $11.00

Location: Various locations throughout the Rockford Park District

Summary of Duties:

Include but are not limited to the following

* Under the direct supervision of the Youth Sports Supervisor, initiates and executes specialty recreational sports programs, makes decisions regarding skill curriculum, lesson plans, program evaluation, assessment of participant's progress for functional age appropriate activities in assigned skill area.
* Coordinates and develops a schedule of activities with the Youth Sports Supervisor that specifically meet the needs of the participants and the goals of the program to allow for maximum program participation, identifies barriers that hinder a participant's success, and implements all reasonable accommodations.
* Implements age and skill appropriate activities to allow for maximum participation to meet the needs of individual participants.
* Takes initiative to coordinate schedule of activities with multiple site staff.
* Informs Youth Sports Supervisor of supplies needed.
* Represents the Park District in a friendly and positive manner when communicating with program participants, parents/guardians, staff, and all other program visitors.
* Attends scheduled meetings as determined by the Youth Sports Supervisor.
* Maintains a working knowledge of department safety procedures. Attends safety training programs and educational in-service opportunities as required, and enforce rules and regulations set-up by the Rockford Park District.
* Gathers, loads, transports and sets-up supplies and equipment for the program sites, including inventory and maintenance with support from program staff.
* Enforces all rules, regulations and policies set up by the Rockford Park District to include the Affirmative Action Plan, maintaining an alcohol and drug free workplace, and following all safety and risk management procedures.
* Assists the Site Coordinator and Site Leaders in organizing the participants when rotating to the next session and getting on the bus.
* Posts all lessons and activities in advance for the Site Coordinator on a weekly basis.
* Signs-in, meets, greets, and communicates with the Site Coordinator and Site Leaders on a daily basis.
* Attends quarterly training in-services to enhance the knowledge of the skills being taught.
* Turns in attendance and lesson plans to the Youth Sports Supervisor at the end of every month.
* Performs all other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

* Must be at least 16 years of age
* General knowledge of the following sports: football, track and field, tennis, basketball and golf
* Must be available to work Monday-Saturday, times will vary
* Some experience working and interacting with children ages 5-12
* Some experience or interest in interacting with youth or teens with and without disabilities in a recreation setting preferred.
* Ability to communicate one-on-one and in groups
* Proficient in the skill area of program being offered and ability to adapt teaching technique considering different abilities and skill levels.
* Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships.
* Provide basic training to other staff on specific area of skill responsibility.
* Ability to problem solve in a variety of situations
* Ability to provide customers with expert care, sensitive consideration and efficient service.
* Good communication skills including expressive, written, and receptive.
* Ability to follow direction from Program Director or Youth Sports Supervisor, demonstrating flexibility as a team player.
* Ability to work under stressful conditions, including situations involving program participants, staff conflicts and dissatisfied customers
* Ability to problem solve in a variety of situations.
* First Aid, CPR and AED training (can be obtained through Rockford Park District).

* This is a physically active position that involves stamina.
* Mobility to various locations needed.
* Medium Work: Exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally; Exerting up to 20 pounds of force frequently; Exerting up to 10 pounds of force constantly
* Assist occasionally with caring for physical needs of participants including toileting, transferring, or pushing participants in wheelchair
* May be exposed to hazardous vegetation (i.e., poison ivy) and insect bites while outdoors
* May be exposed to extreme weather conditions during camp season, particularly rain and heat.
* May work with flammable materials
