Eligible on-campus applicants in California State University Employees Union (CSUEU) Bargaining Units 2,5,7, and 9 will be given first consideration in the recruitment.
Under general supervision, the Interpreter II is distinguished from the Interpreter I by performing more complex assignments requiring a higher level of training, skills, certification, and experience. Assignments often involve high levels of interactive discussions requiring the interpreter to rapidly switch between spoken English and sign language or manual sign system and vice versa. Examples include advanced or highly complex classes, discussions in classrooms, conferences, and workshops with advanced topics, and platform settings where multiple consumers (students, faculty, staff) are served simultaneously.

Anticipated Hiring Range
: $5,500 per month - $5,892 per month (32 Hour Part-Time Adjusted). Salary determination will be commensurate with education, skills and experience.
CSU Classification Salary Range
: $5,344 per month - $11,243 per month

Minimum QualificationsKnowledge and Abilities
- Thorough knowledge of the interpreting process, special communication needs of Deaf or Hard-of-Hearing consumers, Deaf Culture, and platform interpreting techniques.
- Working knowledge of the vocabulary, terminology, and basic information in a variety of subjects; specific knowledge of specialized vocabulary and techniques used in interpreting professional and technical subject matter.
- Ability to interpret effectively in highly interactive situations, shift between ASL or a manual sign system and spoken English, interpret difficult and complex terms, and respond to students’ communication needs.
Education and Experience
- Two years of relevant documented interpreting experience in a variety of settings.
- Wide acquaintance with higher education through attendance at or graduation from a four‑year college or university.
Certification Requirements
- Salary Range A:
Skills certification in interpreting or transliteration (RID or NIC) or comparable certification. - Salary Range B:
Skills certification in both interpreting and transliteration (RID or NIC Advanced) or comparable certification.
Knowledge and Abilities
- Working knowledge of the process of interpretation and the methods and techniques used with Deaf and Hard-of-Hearing consumers.
- Knowledge of the Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf (RID) code of professional conduct and the vocabulary used in assigned courses.
- Ability to hear spoken English and use ASL, Signed English, and/or other manual sign system to generate language.
- Ability to interpret and transliterate between ASL/sign systems and spoken English at the speed required by assignment settings (classroom, conference, one‑on‑one).
- Ability to work with students from diverse backgrounds, adapt terminology, and convey all aspects of lecture content.
- Ability to establish and maintain collaborative relationships with students, professors, staff, colleagues, and Deaf/Hard‑of‑Hearing Services Coordinator, following the Code of Professional Conduct.
- Knowledge of manual communication modes: ASL, Signed English, and/or manual codes, oral and tactile interpreting.
