Incumbents in this position are responsible for examining commercial and private building plans and inspecting construction sites to ensure compliance with building code regulations. Examples of duties include: reviewing plans for complex construction projects and conducting field inspections; conducting preliminary conferences with architects and engineers for new construction, alterations and repairs to existing buildings and coordinating with other City and Federal agencies and testifying before the Board of Building Appeals.

• Reviews building plans, drawings, specifications and calculations for accuracy and completeness; examines individual components to ensure all code-mandated items have been included.
• Conducts preliminary conferences with project architects and engineers to identify potential problems.
• Makes recommendations regarding updates to current building codes.
• Calculates footage to ensure compliance with code. Indicates and makes recommendations for revisions to bring plans into compliance.
• Inspects building sites to ensure plans are followed; conducts field inspections for structural integrity and safety of buildings after a catastrophic event.
• Participates in client meetings related to plan examination of current and proposed projects.
• Provides technical assistance to other City agencies or departments regarding building code matters.

  Requires the ability to lift, carry, push, and pull moderately heavy objects and materials, twenty (20) to fifty (50) pounds, such as lifting project specifications. Tasks involve the regular and, at times, sustained performance of moderately physically demanding work, typically involving some combination of climbing and balancing, stooping, and kneeling in order to perform building inspections.
