Position: Traffic Engineer (Senior)
Location: St. Louis

Traffic Engineer (Senior)

Incumbents in this position are responsible for studying traffic patterns, designing traffic control systems, and programming and maintaining traffic control devices.

Essential Functions and Responsibilities
  • Studies traffic volume and patterns and recommends traffic control measures, sign placement, devices and systems.
  • Participates in planning for traffic control and flow.
  • Meets with developers, city officials, consultants, contractors and the general public.
  • Provides testimony and correspondence regarding traffic accidents.
  • Programs and tests traffic control computers and signals.
  • Inspects rebuilt traffic signals, repairs traffic signals and controllers.
  • Implements in-house signal/system maintenance and construction methods. Establishes maintenance standards.
  • Researches funding opportunities and applies for funding for traffic engineering functions.
  • Maintains records for traffic control system and traffic studies.
  • Receives and responds to traffic complaints from the public, city officials and city employees.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Skills and Abilities
  • Data Utilization:
    Ability to perform mid-level data analysis including auditing, deducing, assessing, concluding, and appraising data.
  • Human Interaction:
    Ability to provide guidance, assistance and interpretation to others on how to apply policies and procedures.
  • Equipment, Machinery, Tools and Materials Use:
    Ability to operate and adjust equipment such as computer terminals, traffic counters, signal controllers, test equipment, etc.
  • Verbal Aptitude:
    Ability to utilize advisory data, such as signal designs, maps, accident reports, requisitions, grant applications, traffic studies, and other technical documents.
  • Mathematical Aptitude:
    Ability to perform arithmetic and statistical calculations, advanced geometry.
  • Functional Reasoning:
    Ability to apply principles of rational systems, interpret instructions, and use independent judgment.
  • Situational Reasoning:
    Ability to exercise judgment and creativity in evaluating information against measurable criteria.
  • Environmental Factors:
    Tasks may involve exposure to adverse conditions, noise, machinery currents, traffic hazards.
  • Physical Requirements:

    Ability to lift, push, pull tools and equipment to repair signals and controllers; stoop while working on signal cabinets.
  • Sensory Requirements:
    Ability to recognize color and shape differences and detect sounds for dangerous traffic conditions.
Qualifications

A bachelor's degree in Urban Planning, Transportation Planning, Traffic or Civil Engineering, or directly related field from a nationally accredited college or university; plus three years of professional traffic engineering experience.

License: Must possess and maintain a valid driver's license while employed by the City of St. Louis. Proof of a valid driver's license will be required.
