Position Overview
We are the Metropolitan Council, the regional government for the seven‑county Twin Cities metropolitan area. The Environmental Services Division is hiring a Senior Engineer or Principal Engineer (depending on qualifications). This 6‑month eligibility list will allow future vacancies.
Job Levels & Salary Senior EngineerFull Salary Range: $88,566 – $143,707 yearly
Anticipated Starting Salary Range: $100,526 – $121,000
Principal EngineerFull Salary Range: $95,805 – $155,397 yearly
Anticipated Starting Salary Range: $111,384 – $155,000
Note:
The starting salary will depend on experience, skills, education, and internal salary equity.
- Manage complex wastewater system planning projects, including forecasting, hydraulic analysis, and evaluating alternative solutions to meet community needs. This may involve managing contracts with engineering consultants and performing engineering evaluations on internal teams.
- Work with engineering teams to inform project scope and capital programming of system expansion projects.
- Develop and update the regional Wastewater System Plan and Council policies in collaboration with internal and external partners.
- Analyze flow meter data to identify trends in community wastewater flow, allocate system costs to communities, and administer the inflow and infiltration mitigation program.
- Participate on or lead task forces composed of community partners to evaluate policy related to regional wastewater system planning or water supply planning.
- Review local comprehensive plans, environmental permits, and Sanitary Sewer Extension Permits to ensure alignment with regional policies and system plans.
- Provide technical support to finance teams for the sewer connection charge program and inflow and infiltration grant programs.
- Mentor less‑experienced staff to develop engineering and project management skills.
- Bachelor’s degree in Engineering or a related field AND 4 years of related experience as an Engineer AND successful completion of the Fundamentals of Engineering Exam (FE) or registered as a Professional Engineer (PE) in Minnesota or a state with reciprocity.
- OR Master’s degree in Engineering or a related field AND 2 years of related experience as an Engineer AND successful completion of the FE or registered as a PE.
- Bachelor’s degree in Engineering or a related field AND 5 years of related experience as an Engineer AND registered as a PE in Minnesota or a state with reciprocity.
- OR Master’s degree in Engineering or a related field AND 3 years of relevant experience AND registered as a PE in Minnesota or a state with reciprocity.
- Experience with managing project budgets, schedules, and scope.
- Water or wastewater system planning or comprehensive plan development.
- Design of wastewater conveyance or treatment systems.
- Fluid mechanics and hydraulic analysis experience or coursework.
- Experience with hydraulic modeling using PC‑SWMM.
- Experience with ArcGIS software.
- Written and verbal communication skills.
- Experience with Microsoft Excel.
- Experience with Power
BI. - Ability to work with stakeholders from diverse backgrounds.
- Advanced skills with ArcGIS and PC‑SWMM.
- Ability to review and understand local comprehensive plans and sanitary sewer plans.
- Ability to use Excel tools to analyze data and perform hydraulic calculations.
