General Description:
Certified Trauma Registrars are data information experts that capture a complete history, diagnosis, treatment, and health status for every eligible trauma patient according to program and regulatory requirements and guidelines.

Specific Tasks:
• Ensure appropriate trauma patients are captured, assure accurate documentation of procedures and diagnosis, and other pertinent data necessary. All verified trauma facilities are required to provide trauma data to State, regional and national registries.
• The Medical Center MC is a verified Level 1 Trauma Center established by the American College of Surgeons (ACoS) Committee on Trauma, therefore, it is required to adhere to the ACS Trauma Standards which include uniform coding as specified according to National Trauma Data Bank and Trauma Quality Improvement Program standards). This data provides essential information to researchers, healthcare providers, and public health officials to better monitor, treat and prevent trauma.
• Work with physicians, administrators, researchers, and health care planners to provide support for trauma program development, ensure compliance of reporting standards, and serve as a valuable resource for trauma information with the ultimate goal of preventing and controlling traumatic injuries.
• Abstract a wide range of medical data from the EMR and code it in compliance with data standards.
• Maintain a thorough understanding of anatomy and physiology, medical terminology, surgical procedures, as well as ICD-10 coding guidelines to inpatient diagnoses and procedures.
• All coding is correlated from supporting clinical documentation in the medical records. You will also participate in the development of coding policies and procedures as identified as well as independently research and solve complex coding problems and assist with special projects as required.
• Ensure adherence to data management protocols as set forth in state and national requirements, departmental standards, perform other related duties incidental to the work described herein.
• Identify areas for coding/documentation improvement in all areas to enhance data quality and minimize patient risk, conduct workload accuracy audits ensuring compliance, facilitate coding timeliness and accuracy.
• Prepare submissions to supervisor on coding and audit activities pending or complete.
• Assist with the preparation of, and participation in, the trauma program verification survey/prepare reports for the trauma service.
• Interface with other areas of the hospital and outside organizations to obtain the proper information needed to accomplish tasks (i.e., information management for computer support or questions, physicians to clarify patient care issues.
• Perform and ensure uniform and consistent coding and reporting of all diagnoses according to program and regulatory requirements and guidelines.
• Ensure proper sequencing of injuries, assures accurate documentation of procedures, and provides sufficient text documentation to support the National Trauma Data Standards (NTDS), Trauma Quality Improvement Program (TQIP), State and Regional registries and any local requirements.
Position Requirements
Bachelor,   1 to 2 Years work experience
Experience:
• Must have recent twelve (12) months experience in ICD-10 (or most current) Medical and Procedural Coding, Abstraction, Data Entry, and Quality Improvement Audits.
• Must have working knowledge of Trauma Quality Improvement Program and National Trauma Data Bank elements.
• Must have completed the current version of the Association for the Advancement of Automotive Medicine Injury Severity Scoring course (AAAM).
• Must have a working knowledge of Windows-based software.

License:
• Certification from American Trauma Society (ATS)

Other Qualifications:
• Must meet the American Trauma Society’s (ATS) Standards for becoming a Certified Trauma Registrar.
• Shall complete necessary continuing education to include all TQIP monthly education experiences (including quizzes) and the TQIP yearly update training at the direction of the onsite government supervisor in conjunction with the Contracting Officer Representative (COR).
• Shall be able to read, write, and speak English well enough to effectively communicate with all parties and other health care providers.
• Possess sufficient initiative, interpersonal relationship skills and social sensitivity such that you can relate constructively to a variety of patients from diverse backgrounds.
• Must be able to demonstrate a broad practical knowledge of accepted principles and procedures in medical records administration and standards of Trauma registry operations.
• Must be self-directed, have excellent organizational skills with good follow through, investigative/analytic skills with detail orientation.
