Position: Hardware Engineer (Research)

Coherence Neuro is a fast-growing, venture-backed company pioneering implantable technologies that interface with the human body to address critical unmet medical needs. We're looking for driven individuals who are passionate about pushing the boundaries of engineering and science to solve some of the most complex biological challenges. In this early-stage environment, we seek versatile team members with a hands‑on approach and a willingness to learn quickly and adapt.

We value diversity and encourage applicants from all backgrounds to join us in our mission. Learn about our team here !

We are seeking a detail-orientated and ambitious Hardware Engineer (Research) III to contribute to the research and development of novel neurotechnology devices which engage the nervous system. The successful candidate will play a key role in the rapid design, prototyping, and characterisation of hardware interfacing research implants with external systems, working closely with surgical and data science teams to deliver high-performance implantable hardware for preclinical programmes.

We seek someone comfortable operating in a fast‑paced start-up environment where requirements evolve quickly and iterative design is essential.

Key Responsibilities

Design and implement implant-system interface hardware, including custom headstages, flex PCBs, breakout boards, and stimulation electronics

Design and validate PCB assemblies for neural stimulation, including programmable drivers, charge‑balancing circuits, and stimulation‑safe protection networks

Perform schematic capture, layout review, component selection, and PCB bring‑up

Assemble, solder, and debug fine‑pitch and miniaturised PCBs through full functional verification

Design and fabricate mechanical prototypes using 3D printing, laser cutting, and machining

Build and maintain test setups for device characterisation and root‑cause analysis

Maintain design records, test reports, and version‑controlled documentation

Collaborate cross-functionally with data scientists, preclinical researchers, and other engineers

Required Qualifications and Skills

Ph.D. in Electronic Engineering, Mechatronics, Biomedical Engineering, or Neuroscience preferred, alternatively

B.Sc. or M.Sc. with 3+ years of hands‑on industry hardware development experience

Proficiency with ECAD tools (Altium preferred) and able to take circuits from schematic through to validated prototype

Experience with embedded firmware development, including timing-critical and low-power design

Competent with rapid mechanical prototyping: 3D printing, laser cutting

Strong practical bench skills and systematic hardware debug

Clear, structured communicator able to work across engineering, science, and surgical disciplines

Bonus Skills

Direct experience with neural recording or stimulation hardware in preclinical settings

Familiarity with standard neurotech acquisition platforms (Intan, Open Ephys, Ripple, TDT)

Understanding of electrode‑electrolyte electrochemistry and impedance spectroscopy

RF communication and wireless power delivery for implantable devices

Flexible or stretchable PCB design experience

Project management or cross-functional technical leadership experience

Reporting Structure:

This role is an integral part of the Research team and reports directly to the Lead R&D Engineer.

Benefits
