Make a Difference In Your CommunityThe Health Plan Of San Mateo (HPSM) is a local nonprofit health plan that offers coverage to San Mateo County's underserved population. We serve more than 150,000 county residents through several programs, with most qualifying for coverage through Medi‑Cal. HPSM has over 300 employees and partners closely with clinicians and community organizations throughout the region.
Program OverviewThe Internship Program supports recruitment, skill development, career growth, and retention of emerging managed‑care leaders by fostering a positive work environment with dedicated mentorship. This paid opportunity lets interns contribute meaningfully to HPSM’s organizational focus areas.
Internship Scope- Knowledge and experience in the operation of a non‑profit community‑based health plan.
- Knowledge and experience in developing programs and services that benefit our diverse membership.
- Professional experience working on a specific project important to HPSM and a chance to present recommendations through a final paper and/or presentation to HPSM leadership.
- Start date:
June 22, 2026 (flexible based on applicant schedule). - Work type:
Remote with in‑person opportunities at the South San Francisco office. - Applicants must have a California residence.
- Duration: 10–12 weeks (16–29 hours per week, up to 400 hours total).
- Pay: $22–$24 per hour, depending on experience.
- Currently enrolled or recent graduate of an undergraduate or graduate degree program in public health, public policy, business administration, social work, social sciences, communications, or related disciplines with a minimum 3.0 GPA.
- Experience and/or skills that align with one of the projects listed below.
- Solid written and verbal communication skills.
- Intermediate proficiency with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook, and PowerPoint).
HPSM’s Health Promotion unit seeks an intern who will standardize outreach processes and develop an evaluation framework for outreach pilots. The intern will also engage with members to pilot outreach strategies aimed at closing care gaps and will gather member input regarding barriers and facilitators.
Key Deliverables- Member outreach toolkit (criteria for outreach pilots, script template, evaluation framework, etc.).
- Member outreach outcome raw data collected during pilot strategies—call outcomes, number of outreach attempts, themes from member conversations.
- Final paper and/or presentation to HPSM leadership.
