Position Description

Associate Specialist - Immunogenetics and Transplantation Laboratory (ITL)

Division of Transplant Surgery, Department of Surgery, University of California, San Francisco.

The Division of Transplant Surgery, Immunogenetics and Transplantation Laboratory (ITL) in the Department of Surgery at the University of California, San Francisco is seeking to fill an Associate Specialist position. This position will work with Dr. Rajalingam Raja and his team on projects related to Immunogenetics, Histocompatibility, and Transplant Immunology.

Responsibilities include:

  • Develop a clinical platform to classify cross‑reactive epitope groups (CREGs) by analyzing complex binding patterns of HLA antibodies derived from patient sera.
  • Evaluate the immunogenic potential of mismatched HLA epitopes to improve donor‑recipient compatibility, enhance graft survival, and reduce immune sensitization and risk of rejection.
  • Create AI‑ and machine learning‑based tools and methodologies to advance transplantation success, optimize patient outcomes, and support UCSF's mission of delivering high‑quality, impactful patient care.
  • Specialists appointed at the Associate rank must have a master's degree (or equivalent) in Bioinformatics, Computational Biology, Computer Science, Mathematics, Statistics, or a related field or at least 5–10 years of research experience. A Ph.D. degree (or equivalent) in the same fields, or ten or more years of experience, is preferred. Candidates must have expertise in pipeline development, bioinformatic tools, data management, and demonstrated competence in programming languages such as R or Python for bioinformatics analyses.

    They should have strong statistical and analytical skills and excellent written and oral communication skills, and will be expected to actively participate in writing journal articles and grant proposals.
