Santa Barbara Infrared, Inc. (SBIR)

Recruiting for Senior Electro-Optical/Infrared (EO/IR) Systems Engineer. Report to the CTO. Primary responsibility: define, design, and analyze electro‑optical test systems for product development (Infrared Scene Projectors, Standard Commercial Products, Integrated Electro‑Optical Test Systems). Also support product integration, characterization, verification, and validation.

Compensation

$170,000 – $195,000 per year (DOE)

Qualifications
  • BS/BA in physics, engineering, or related technical degree.
  • Minimum 10 years’ experience in electro‑optics, infrared systems, or related field (advanced degree may count).
  • Solid foundation in optics, sensors, and EO/IR sensing systems for ground, air, or space.
  • Experience with physical modeling, simulation, and analysis.
  • Systems engineering experience on EO/IR system hardware development: requirements flow‑down, trade studies, FMEA/root‑cause analysis, product lifecycle support, test plan development.
  • Laboratory experience with optical systems test equipment and components.
  • Experience developing optical error budgets.
  • Strong prioritization and organization skills.
  • Excellent communication of system requirements, testing needs, debug information, and design concepts to engineering disciplines.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Windows, Word, Excel, PowerPoint.
  • Vendor and customer team communication, demonstrating system performance via factory and site acceptance testing.
  • Ability to travel to customer facilities (5–15%).
Preferred Qualifications
  • Advanced degree in physics, engineering, or related technical field.
  • Technical leadership experience: high‑level project planning, mentorship, roadmap development.
  • Opto‑mechanical design, STOP analysis, tolerancing expertise.
  • Experience with EO/IR technology, imaging, radiometry, calibration techniques.
  • Proficiency with C/C++, MATLAB, Python.
  • Image processing/analysis software skills.
  • Optical design and simulation tools such as Zemax or equivalent.
  • MEMS, photolithography fabrication, IC packaging experience.
  • Electronics experience with ICs, microcontrollers, FPGAs, high‑throughput data transfer.
