$51.72 - $82.76 Hourly

$107,584 - $172,135 Annually

The Materials Testing Laboratory provides all technical support regarding the design, use, application, evaluation and research associated with all construction materials. The Geotechnical Section provides field exploration, testing and design of the geologic soils and bedrock formations to ensure stability of the roadway facility.

As a valued new employee to NMDOT, you may be eligible to receive three (3) days of administrate leave upon your start date. This is applicable to external hires not within the State of New Mexico Government

Why does the job exist?

This position will supervise employees in the Geotechnical Design, Foundation Design, and Field Geotechnical Drill Units within the State Materials Bureau to manage and oversee the developing of geotechnical and foundation related projects.

How does it get done?

This position will mentor and lead employees by establishing goals through annual performance evaluations.

Through oversight/ management this position will review and provide for geotechnical and foundation related issues, evaluate issues of interest and provide all necessary support to the State Materials Director in the Evaluation of project level construction procedures, development of specifications, investigating, documentation and researching relevant areas of concern for the benefit if the Department.

Who are the customers?

State Materials Bureau, Districts, Private Testing Laboratories and other external customers.

Ideal Candidate

The ideal candidate will have preferred experience/education in the following areas:

* Utilizing the NMDOT Standard Specifications and AASHTO LRFD Design Manuals

* Performing Engineering duties related to project development, design,
roadway construction, and maintenance

* Reviewing statuses, regulations, and policies related to Federal Aid highway
construction to assure compliance

* Contract Management

* Capable of maintaining clear communication with staff, supervisors,
and other stakeholders

* Keeping projects organized and on schedule

Minimum Qualification

Bachelor of Science Degree from an accredited college or university in a relevant engineering discipline with licensure and eight (8) years of engineering experience, four (4) of which must be as a Licensed Professional Engineer and (2) years of experience in a supervisory/managerial role. Any combination of education from an accredited college or university in a related field and/or direct experience in this occupation totaling twelve (12) years may substitute for the required education and experience.

Must be certified by the NMBLPEPS as a Licensed Professional Engineer in good standing within six (6) months of hire.

Employment Requirements

Must possess and maintain a valid Driver's License. Must possess and maintain a current Defensive Driving Course certificate from the State of New Mexico or must pass and receive a Defensive Driving Course certificate as a condition of continued employment.

Pre-employment background investigation is required and is conditional pending results.

Working Conditions

Work is performed primarily in an office setting and involves extensive personal computer and telephone use with extended periods of sitting. Working conditions also include field work in proximity to drilling rigs and heavy equipment with concomitant exposure to moving mechanical parts, loud noises, varying weather conditions, rough or rugged terrain and high speed/ high volume traffic. Job requires periodic state-wide travel.
