The Materials Testing Laboratory provides field exploration, sampling, and technical support regarding the design, use, application, evaluation, and research associated with construction materials and maintains the Department's national accreditation with the American Association of Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO) re:source, ASTM International, and the Cement and Concrete Reference Laboratory (CCRL) laboratory inspection program.
As a valued new employee to NMDOT, you may be eligible to receive three (3) days of administrate leave upon your start date. This is applicable to external hires not within the State of New Mexico Government.
Why does the job exist?
Ensures volumetric testing of hot mix asphalt and warm mix asphalt conducted by District Field personnel and private testing facilities is compliant with standards of the American Association of State Highways & Transportation Officials and the American Society for Testing Materials.
How does it get done?
Conducting inspections and monitor New Mexico Department of Transportation Lab Technicians in the use if in-house lab equipment for hot mix asphalt/ warm mix asphalt.
Provide technical expertise through the Technical Training Certification Program.
Ensure district field personnel, construction personnel and private testing facilities on the process if calibration hot mix/ warm asphalt utilizing laboratory AASHTO/ ASTM testing methods.
Who are the customers?
State Materials Bureau, Districts, Private Testing Laboratories and other external customers.
Ideal Candidate
The ideal candidate will have preferred experience/education in the following areas:
* Lab Testing Experience.
* Experience working with NMDOT Standard Specification for Highway & Bridge Construction.
* Certified in Technical Training Certification Program (TTCP) Aggregate/ Hot-Mix Asphalt (HMA).
* Knowledge of American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials procedures (AASHTO).
* Knowledge of American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM)
* Willing to be part of a team of technicians and cross-train in other units.
Minimum Qualification
High School Diploma or equivalent and four (4) years of relevant experience. Any combination of education from an accredited college or university in a related field and/or direct experience in this occupation totaling four (4) years may substitute for the required experience.
Employment Requirements
Must possess and maintain a valid Driver's License. Must possess and maintain a current Defensive Driving Course certificate from the State of New Mexico or must pass and receive a Defensive Driving Course certificate as a condition of continued employment. Employment requires successful completion of post offer pre-employment physical exam and is conditional pending results. Pre-employment background investigation is required and is conditional pending results.
Working Conditions
Work is performed primarily in the field in varying weather conditions: hot or cold, humidity, wind, rain and snow. Exposure to sunlight, dust, pollen, chemicals, rough/rugged terrain, insects and reptiles, noxious plants and infected trash; exposure to moving mechanical parts, high precarious places, toxic fumes/chemicals and/or airborne particles, hazardous chemicals and/or asphalt and petroleum products; exposure to temperatures up to 150 degrees around oil distributor operations;
high speed/high volume traffic and loud noises; subject to falls and bruises, considerable physical strain; standing for extended periods of time doing traffic control or walking long distances for litter control; hand dexterity required for some duties; numerous specific vision abilities to include: close, distance, color and peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus; some climbing, reaching, kneeling and crawling to perform job duties;
ability to lift up to 50 pounds. Work may also be performed in an office setting with exposure to visual/Video Display Terminal (VDT) and extensive personal computer and telephone usage to include working with faxes, copiers and printers. May be required to work irregular hours and is subject to call out for weather, accidents and/or emergencies on short notice; frequent temporary assignments that require travel and extended overnight stays to include weekends, holidays, and overtime are required.
Willingness to accept change of geographical assignments; interaction with the public.
