Position Summary

The Deputy Chief Information Officer (Deputy CIO) is a senior IT executive who supports the Chief Information Officer (CIO) by overseeing daily technology operations, managing IT staff, and leading strategic initiatives. The Deputy CIO ensures reliable, secure, and efficient IT services, manages vendor relationships and budgets, and frequently serves as the acting CIO in the CIO’s absence.

Duties & Responsibilities
  • Directing IT infrastructure, applications, support services, and system maintenance.
  • Assisting the CIO with strategic planning, policy development, and long-term goal setting.
  • Hiring, mentoring, and evaluating IT personnel.
  • Leading cross-functional projects and ensuring timely delivery of IT services.
  • Monitoring expenditures, managing contracts, and ensuring compliance with security standards.
  • Serving as officer in charge of the Office of Information Technology (OIT) in absence of CIO.
  • Evaluating service delivery initiatives and efforts of OIT.
  • Reviewing service delivery feedback from students, faculty, and staff and recommending appropriate action to improve service delivery.
  • Periodically reviewing and categorizing service feedback to determine continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Coordinating operational activities and schedules of all areas in OIT.
  • Ensuring documentation of all OIT processes and procedures in electronic format.
  • Developing procedures and recommending protocols to ensure security of all SFCC information resources.
  • Coordinating content of the OIT website.
  • Responding to after-hours emergencies and acting as main point of contact for system and infrastructure emergency procedures.
  • Performing related duties as assigned.

  • Knowledge of information security best practices.
  • Knowledge of Information Technology Service Management (ITSM).
  • Knowledge of IT project management principles.
  • Knowledge of systems and network management and administration.
  • Knowledge of applications/web development using a multi-tier architecture.
  • Knowledge of information systems (preferably Banner).
  • Knowledge of college policies and procedures.
  • Skill in problem resolution and troubleshooting.
  • Skill in negotiation and coordination among peers.
  • Skill in decision making and problem solving.

    Skill in interpersonal relations and in dealing with the public.
  • Skill in oral and written communication.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills and ability to work effectively with a wide range of constituencies in a diverse community.

  • Ability to balance vision and execution.
  • Ability to develop requests for and evaluate proposals in reference to information services technology.
  • Ability to apply Baldridge/AQIP-based management approaches.
Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or a related field.

Eight (8) years in IT Management experience leading a wide range of information systems and technology functions including, but not limited to, service desk operations, technology support, systems and network administration, information systems, applications development, information security, with at least five (5) years of supervisory experience.

  • Work is normally performed in a typical interior/office work environment.
Schedule Designation

This position is located on campus in Santa Fe, New Mexico. Typically, 8:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m., Monday through Friday. May be required to work after hours and/or weekends.
