This is a position for an undergraduate student research assistant. The student will be participating in research on the microbial community of marine invertebrates.
This position is for 29 hours a week at $18 per hour.
Students canreceive course credit for this position through the Career Center.
Examples of Duties
Facility Support:
The responsibilities of the Undergraduate Research Assistant include, but are not limited to the following:
* Processing collected animals or settlement plates by photographing said animals or plates, preserving samples, keying out and identifying individual organisms, and preparing samples for DNA analysis.
* Preparation of organismal and/or environmental DNA for sequencing, consisting of:
* DNA extraction
* PCR amplification of the DNA
* Gel electrophoresis
* DNA barcoding
* Normalization of DNA concentrations
* Entering and managing data
* Assistance with analysis and manuscript preparations for submission to peer-reviewed scientific journals
By the end of this experience, students will be able to:
* Apply laboratory techniques (e.g., DNA extraction, PCR, gel electrophoresis) with accuracy and consistency
* Analyze and interpret biological and environmental data
* Maintain organized and accurate research records and datasets
* Contribute to scientific writing and communicate findings for academic audiences
Other duties as assigned
Minimum Qualifications
* Must be a student at NCF, have taken Foundations I and II, and have an enthusiasm for lab research.
* Must have strong organizational and problem-solving skills.
* Punctual, reliable, and eager to contribute to efforts in the lab.
Preferred Qualifications
* Experience doing gel electrophoresis, performing PCR, use of a micropipette, and familiarity with sterile technique.
* Experience using Microsoft Excel/Word, and Google Sheets/Docs.
