Provides coaching, modeling of best practices, and ongoing monitoring to support education staff in both stand‑alone and public school partnership classrooms in implementing effective teaching practices that promote children’s school readiness and achievement of CLASS score benchmarks.

Job Title: Head Start Education Coach

Department: Head Start

Education Level and Certification: BA/BS with 30 semester hours in Early Childhood. Previous experience working with preschool classrooms.

Reports To: Education Manager

Terms of Employment: Schedule 3 / 10-month-205 day position / Salary determined by Head Start budget based on education and experience.

Performance Responsibilities and Job Tasks

Provides coaching, modeling of best practices, and ongoing monitoring to support education staff in both stand‑alone and public school partnership classrooms in implementing effective teaching practices that promote children’s school readiness and achievement of CLASS score benchmarks. Supports the use of positive guidance strategies that foster children’s physical, intellectual, social, and emotional development, while engaging staff through supportive, respectful, and professional interactions tailored to adult learners.

Ensures all coaching and monitoring align with Head Start Performance Standards, written component plans, and applicable state licensing requirements, and collaborates closely with the Head Start management team and public school partners.

Head Start Requirements
  • Must be proficient in verbal communication and in maintaining written documentation.
  • Must possess the ability to have good environmental awareness (visual and auditory responsiveness) to keep children safe.
  • Training, meetings and community interactions may include evenings or weekends.
  • Occasional out‑of‑town travel for training is required.
  • A clear criminal records check (including child abuse registry check) is required prior to employment.
  • Must complete a screening physical with a tuberculosis screening upon hire.
  • Within 90 days of employment (or sooner if required by local/state regulations), must obtain and continually maintain basic first aid and pediatric/adult CPR certification.
  • Translate communication between program, child and family using family’s primary language when applicable.
  • Comply with the Head Start Performance Standards and ESU 13 Employee Performance and Code of Ethics.
  • Maintain standards of confidentiality regarding the program, children, families, staff, and community.
  • To drive agency vehicles (if applicable), must have a valid driver’s license and be insurable by the ESU 13 insurance carrier and have a Motor Vehicle Record acceptable to ESU 13.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Essential Functions
  • Familiar with Head Start Performance Standards, Child Care Licensing, and NDE Rule 11.
  • Provide opportunities for education staff to be observed and receive feedback and modeling of effective teaching practice.
  • Provide technical assistance with classroom management, classroom environment, and activities to ensure a quality program.
  • Monitor lesson plans, assessment data, parent‑teacher interactions, and other records to ensure that children’s needs are met and program quality is maintained. Document as required in Child Plus and other systems.
  • Work with ESU 13 and public school staff to ensure a well‑managed program that supports regular communication, Head Start documentation and team goals.
  • Coordinate and provide training, mentoring, and coaching for education staff as needed on a group and individual basis.
  • Perform formal classroom observations including video recording when necessary.
  • Maintain CLASS observer and GOLD interrater reliability.
  • Visit assigned partnership classrooms on a regular basis as determined in coordination with supervisor.
