The Tapscott Lab is composed of an interactive group of scientists investigating gene transcription in a chromatin context in normal development and disease. Areas of current interest focus on how abnormal activation of early developmental programs alters gene expression and cell fate in human diseases, including facioscapulohumeral muscular dystrophy (FSHD) and certain cancers. The lab focuses on mechanisms spanning epigenetics, transcription, translation, cell cycle regulation, and cell signaling, as well as how diseased cells interact with their environment through RNA/protein secretion and immune evasion.

Ongoing projects include CRISPR- and drug-based screens to identify regulators capable of suppressing the disease-causing early developmental program for therapeutic intervention. Findings from model developmental systems are applied to understand human diseases, including cancers and degenerative diseases.
