Job Description
The Department of Urology has an outstanding opportunity for a Research Scientist/Engineer 1 to join their team. Reporting to a Research Professor, the Research Scientist/Engineer 1 will facilitate several ongoing research projects spanning basic science studies and clinical medicine, collaborating with the University Departments of Urology, Medicine, and Pathology, as well as the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Center. The employee will work under limited supervision to complete assigned tasks and projects, demonstrating the ability to work independently and follow general guidelines.
They will provide assistance to the animal facility team as needed and act as a team member for the on‑call rapid Tissue Acquisition Necropsy (TAN) program, working with research scientists and physicians through tissue collections.
- Molecular biology, cell culture (60%)
- Cell culture experience.
- Molecular biology experience in RNA and DNA isolation, knockdown and over-expression experiments, real‑time PCR, western blot analysis, and immunohistochemistry.
- Familiarity with spreadsheets and databases.
- Collection and documentation of data (15%)
- Maintain highly accurate records of specimens received and processed.
- Proficient in data collection and input into databases.
- Other related duties (10%)
- Collaborate with team members to accomplish organizational goals and propose ideas for improved efficiency.
- Order lab supplies and monitor lab safety compliance, including chemical hygiene.
- Learn new techniques as required for optimal job performance.
- Animal studies (10%)
- Provide assistance to the animal facility team as needed.
- On‑call rapid Tissue Acquisition Necropsy (TAN) team (5%)
- Rotate on the TAN team every third week.
- Assist with the processing of samples and ensure all documentation is complete and accurate.
- Be available in the laboratory within two hours of a page; approximately 4–5 rapid autopsies per year per member.
Perform other duties as assigned.
This position performs essential services and may be required to work during any period of declared suspended operation.
Required QualificationsMinimum Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in the basic biological sciences with an emphasis in a biology discipline and one year of relevant experience working in a genitourinary laboratory.
- Experience in the handling and processing of human tissues.
- Experience with research autopsy collections.
- Experience working with immunocompromised mice and tumor implantation.
- Molecular biology experience in RNA and DNA isolation, knockdown and over-expression experiments, real‑time PCR, western blot analysis, and immunohistochemistry.
- Cell culture experience.
- Familiarity with spreadsheets and databases.
- Experience with laboratory techniques such as tissue sectioning and staining.
- Must be able to work under limited supervision and demonstrate independence.
- Requires flexibility in working hours, including evenings and occasional work outside the standard workweek.
Pay Range Minimum: $56,448.00 annual
Pay Range Maximum: $57,024.00 annual
