Qualifications
  • Credentials: State Certificate to teach in specific position.
  • Education: Bachelor’s degree in Secondary Education or a related field.
  • Training or Experience

    Required:

    Completion of student teaching. May also require special expertise in electives such as band, vocal music, art, orchestra, speech and drama, etc.
Job Summary

Performs skilled/professional level tasks under limited supervision to provide children/students with proper teaching techniques and learning environment. Establishes lesson plans, grades, and accomplishes curriculum objectives to enhance each student’s self-esteem and increase personal growth. Meets with parents and other staff to enhance learner outcomes. Utilizes discretion, ingenuity and independent judgment due to the variety of challenges of the job.

Skills and Abilities
  • Basic communication skills to exchange information, give/receive simple instructions and respond to inquiries.
  • Filling out forms, giving instructions, and writing/printing legibly.
  • Knowledge of grammatical structure and vocabulary for preparing correspondence.
  • Communicates in clear, grammatically correct English.
  • Contact with others:
    Regular telephone or in-person contact with the public to determine information needed.
  • Interpreting and translating facts and information, explaining situations and advising alternative courses of action.
  • Maintaining confidentiality of sensitive information.
Essential Job Functions (Performance Responsibilities)
  • Develop lesson plans and instructional materials that meet district curriculum goals and individual pupil needs.
  • Translate lesson plans into learning experiences that effectively utilize instructional time.
  • Establish and maintain standards of pupil behavior for a functional learning atmosphere.
  • Evaluate pupil academic and social growth, keep records, and prepare progress reports.
  • Communicate with parents through conferences and other means to discuss pupil progress and interpret the school program.
  • Identify pupil needs and cooperate with staff to address health, attitude, and learning problems.
  • Create an effective learning environment with displays, bulletin boards, and interest centers.
  • Maintain professional competence through in-service education and self-selected growth activities.
  • Select and requisition books and instructional aids; maintain inventory records.
  • Supervise pupils during out-of-classroom activities.
  • Administer group standardized tests per district testing program.
  • Participate in curriculum development programs as required.
  • Participate in faculty committees and sponsor pupil activities.
  • May coach or participate in extracurricular activities, sponsor students in competitions, etc., based on position.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the principal.

  • Continues personal growth and development.

Supervision exercised: Employee does not supervise other employees.

Physical/Mental Requirements and Working Conditions
  • Must communicate on the telephone.
  • Must navigate various sites.
  • Must perform playground, lunch, bus, and related duties.
  • Those assigned to coaching or physical education must demonstrate proper techniques in athletic/physical activities.
  • Science instructors handle hazardous materials and perform lab experiments safely.
  • Shop/industrial arts/technology instructors operate and maintain equipment such as saws, motors, grinders.
  • Music, speech, drama, and art instructors possess required expertise and manage student safety.

Terms of Employment: Length of the work year and hours of employment shall be those established by the District. (180-day contract)

Evaluation: Performance will be evaluated per Shawnee Board Policy on evaluation of personnel.
