Position qualifies for 30 cents/hour Maintenance and Trades differential pay and 50 cents/hour Shift differential pay. Salary can vary depending upon education, experience, or qualifications.

Position
Description:
The Kansas Department of Administration has an HVAC Service Technician Series opening in Topeka. This position is responsible for completing the installation, maintenance, and repair of refrigeration and air conditioning systems and related air handling equipment.
Job Responsibilities:
Troubleshoots, repairs and/or maintains the air conditioning/heating system to control the temperature and humidity in buildings with central air systems. This is done by identifying and replacing defective parts, maintaining controls systems, fans, condensers, evaporators and compressors, adjusting controls, setting thermostats, replacing switches, fuses, and electrical controls. This requires the ability to diagnose problems using a variety of skills using volt-ohmmeters and other tools as well as testing devices of the trade;
having knowledge of heating, ventilation and air conditioning theory and methods; having the ability to read specifications and blueprints and adhering to safety practices of the trade.
Inspections of air conditioners, chillers, and heating equipment, i.e.:
Air Handlers, Furnaces, motors, compressors, condensing units, evaporators, etc. to evaluate the functional operation of the system and make any necessary adjustments. This is done by observing units to detect malfunctions and insure cooling or heating is taking place, checking compressors, air handlers, condensing units, controls; examining coolant lines for damage and accumulation of frost; attaching gauges to verify conformance of unit to temperature, pressure, BTU and other specifications by having knowledge of HVAC systems and operating specifications and the ability to use testing tools, i.e., volt-meters and gauges.
Performs routine preventative maintenance on equipment.
Installs, replaces and modifies HVAC systems in order to bring them into proper operation. This is done by putting motors, compressors, condensing units, evaporators and other components in place following blueprints and design specifications; connecting the equipment to duct work, refrigerant lines and electrical power sources and charging the system with refrigerant. This requires the ability to read and understand blueprints and design specifications, skill in the use of trade tools and knowledge of HVAC systems.
Completes work orders by recording the time and materials using CMMS program on each job.
Participates in a variety of special projects/tasks as designated by supervisor directed at promoting and fostering an attitude of cooperation and teamwork towards co-workers and Division customers. Performs other related duties as assigned in order to assist other crafts with multi-craft projects.
