The General Ledger Accountant works directly with the Controller and is responsible for the maintenance of all aspects of HK’s general ledger, including, timeliness and accuracy of data entry, account reconciliation and assisting administration with financial reports. Responsible to analyze journal entries, supporting documentation and affected accounts and work with property accountants to ensure validity. Incumbent has overall responsibility of ensuring the accuracy of all accounting entered into the accounting system, including ensuring accurate and timely monthly close, billings, collections and cash applications.

All while maintaining an environment with strong internal controls.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
  • Maintains and reconciles general ledger accounts, including:
  • reviewing account balances for accuracy;
  • reconciling monthly bank statements to the general ledger
  • preparing and posting monthly departmental charge backs, pre-paid expenses, and amortizations;
  • preparing and posting journal entries to correct balances;
  • creating new GL accounts and inactivate or delete obsolete accounts while maintaining the chart of accounts.
Responsibilities
  • Prepare and post month-end close and accounting transactions in a timely and accurate manner
  • Assists Controller with general ledger monthly and yearly closes, including preparation of the required reconciliations and work papers for the annual audit.
  • Assists Controller with cash flow and cash requirement assessments.
  • Reviews personnel action forms for budget availability and coding prior to hire and/or posting.
  • Assist Housing Kitsap staff in understanding their financial reports.
  • Interact with internal and external auditors to ensure financial statements are presented accurately and filed on time.
  • Keep abreast of regulatory requirements and best practices in accounting.
  • Assists other Accounting and Finance staff when needed.
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE,

SKILLS AND ABILITIES
  • Solid knowledge of accounting
  • Ability to effectively communicate, both verbally and in writing, with internal and external customers in a professional and positive manner.
  • Ability to maintain strict confidentiality standards.
  • Ability to learn the departments and organizations structure, procedures, regulations and requirements as they relate to the functions of the position.
  • Must be adept at handling multiple tasks and responsibilities; have the ability to effectively change priorities quickly and to work cooperatively and proactively with department members to accomplish goals.
  • Excellent problem solving, analytical and interpersonal skills.
  • Superior knowledge of manual and automated accounting systems and processes.
  • Ability to solve complex technical accounting problems.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with staff, State Examiners, and other officials.
  • Ability to interpret and comply with established Local, State, and Federal accounting procedures and systems.
  • Ability to organize and establish priorities for work and meet deadlines.
  • Ability to work independently and accurately with attention to detail and exercise of sound judgment.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Business Administration, Accounting or Finance, or related field preferred; or equivalent combination of education training and experience.
  • 2+ years’ experience of General Ledger and Journal Entries experience
  • Must have intermediate-advanced level Excel skills
  • Excellent analytical skills and ability to resolve complex problems with multiple variables
  • Excellent organizational skills with attention to detail
