Under the direction of the Mechanical Design Supervisor or Engineering Manager, the Mechanical Designer/Engineer will work as part of a multi-disciplinary heavy equipment design engineering team to design and develop new and innovative products to solve problems faced by our customers. This includes utilizing computer-aided software, specifically Solid Works, to create basic 3D layouts, drawings, and schematics of parts, assemblies, and technical renderings.
Responsibilities include customer visits, problem definition, concept development, cross-functional reviews, component selection and detailed design, system prototyping and validation, production design release, manufacturing support, and support of field personnel. Additionally, they will lead design projects and mentor junior level engineers to ensure growth and consistency within the team.
- BSc Mechanical Engineering or Diploma Mechanical Engineering Technology. or
C.Eng. Tech - 5+ years of experience in a similar role
- The incumbent may be required to travel periodically, occasionally to remote locations
- Office setting: some travel to mines, NPD & Test & Validation sites
- Proficiency in CAD software (e.g., Solid Works, AutoCAD) and simulation tools (e.g., ANSYS, MATLAB, Nastran)
- Excellent problem-solving skills and attention to detail
- Strong communication and teamwork skills
- Extensive experience in material selection, manufacturing processes, and cost considerations
- Ability to read and interpret complex mechanical drawings and assemblies
- Ability to read, interpret & modify hydraulic schematics
- Ability to read, interpret & modify pneumatic schematics
- Strong knowledge of industry standards and regulations related to mechanical systems for underground mining equipment
- Advanced understanding of mechanical system & mechanical system integration and the ability to design and implement complex mechanical system integration solutions
- Experience in system testing and validation using advanced testing equipment and techniques
- Ability to troubleshoot complex mechanical system issues using advanced diagnostic tools and techniques
- Proficiency in creating comprehensive documentation including engineering calculations, FEA Reports, CFD Reports, ECN's, etc
- Lead the design of complex mechanical systems for underground mobile mining equipment using advanced software tools such as Solid Works or Autodesk to create 3D layouts, drawings and schematics of parts, assemblies, and technical renderings
- Simulate complex mechanical systems using software tools such as Solid Works, Autodesk or Ansys to optimize the performance, reliability, and safety of products
- Create and modify mechanical designs using CAD-based tools
- Identify and define testing criteria and validation methods based on industry standards
- Lead design reviews and provide input for continuous improvement efforts
- Guide and advise on regulatory compliance for intricate mechanical systems, ensuring adherence to global standards and regulations
- Select and provide guidance on appropriate components and materials for mechanical designs
- Optimize designs for performance, cost, and manufacturability
- Prepare comprehensive technical documentation, reports, and presentations
- Identify, troubleshoot and resolve complex maintenance and calibration tasks on integrated mechanical systems using advanced diagnostic tools and techniques
- Provide technical leadership and mentorship to junior engineers and designers
- Develop and implement advanced mechanical systems and strategies
- Providing continuous support to the production team during the assembly phase of capital equipment builds
- Provide support to the aftermarket factory team, customer or distributor for commissioning, field troubleshooting needs at customer or distributor sites as required
- Performs other relevant duties as assigned by the Manager
