PAY GRADE: AI2/212 Days

PRIMARY PURPOSE:

The primary responsibility of the At-Risk School Counselor is assisting campus school counselors and administrators with identification, prevention, intervention and management of at-risk students as identified by the state-defined criteria.

The At-Risk School Counselor must act with integrity, support organizational goals, demonstrate the ability to inspire, grow and motivate others, utilize feedback, drive for results and commit to championing the needs of the students, employees and overall District.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Required:
  • Master's degree in Counseling from an accredited college or university
  • Two years' experience as a licensed counselor.
Preferred:
  • Three years' experience as a school counselor
  • Successful experience working with secondary at-risk populations
SPECIAL KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS:
  • Knowledge of current effective school counseling strategies and techniques
  • Advanced organizational skills in planning, time management and prioritizing
  • Strong skills in Microsoft Word, Excel and Power Point
  • Evidence of excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Knowledge of the thirteen (13) state-defined at-risk indicators
MAJOR REPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES:
  • Serves as an At-Risk Counselor for at risk students.
  • Coordinates with the Guidance and Counseling Director to meet district objectives.
  • Monitors the process of the following at-risk populations for the purpose of determining appropriate interventions and support: LEP (Limited English Proficiency) students
    • LEP (Limited English Proficiency) students
    • Students placed in an alternative education program
    • Expelled students
    • Students on probation, deferred prosecution or other conditional release
    • Students in custody or care of the Department of Protective and Regulatory Services
    • Homeless students
    • Students in residential placement facility in the district
  • Develops and implements intervention strategies and maintain an at-risk student database for monitoring progress of interventions.
  • Identifies, analyzes and applies research findings to facilitate improvement of at-risk students.
  • Participates in campus and district-wide activities that contribute to the academic, personal and social development of students.
  • Facilitates collaboration and communication with campus school counselors, administrators, diagnosticians and dropout prevention specialists to determine student needs of at-risk students and ensure compliance success of at-risk special populations.
  • Monitors and verifies at-risk coding for PEIMS (Public Education Information Management System).
  • Complete monthly reports and document all correspondence with students, parents, teachers, counselors and administrators.
  • Complies with district policies, as well as state and federal laws and regulations.
  • Serves as a member of the campus counseling team.
  • Perform all other duties as assigned
WORKING CONDITIONS:

The usual and customary methods of performing the job's functions require the following physical demands: physical mobility, standing, prolonged sitting, some lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling. This position will also require both traveling within the district and state wide. Mental demands:
Ability to solve problems and deal with a variety of situations; ability to interpret a variety of data; ability to interpret TEC and policy; ability to apply knowledge of current research and theory, ability to be effective in both oral and written communication; ability to maintain emotional control under stress.
