Responsible for supporting the instructional program in an elementary school classroom and other assigned areas. Key duties include developing lesson plans, delivering group and individual instruction, supervising students, collaborating with staff and administrators, and responding to inquiries from parents or guardians regarding the instructional program and student progress.
Essential Job Functions- Administers developmental testing programs and subject‑specific assessments to evaluate student competency levels and develop individual learning plans.
- Under supervision provides first aid and assistance to students (e.g., tube feeding, toileting, diapering) to ensure appropriate care.
- Advises parents or legal guardians on student progress, expectations, and methods for improvement.
- Assesses student progress toward IEP goals (behavioral, motor development, communication, academic, vocational needs) and provides feedback to students, parents, and administration.
- Collaborates with instructional staff, other school personnel, parents, and community resources to improve overall student outcomes and achieve classroom objectives.
- Case‑manages students’ individualized educational programs (IEP).
- Provides an effective educational program that addresses individual student needs.
- Differentiates classroom work to supply materials that align with individualized learning plans within established lesson plans.
- Directs student teachers, paraprofessionals, volunteers, and/or student workers to implement an effective classroom program and meet individual student needs.
- Facilitates student learning by creating a learning environment, integrating technology, arranging field trips, and organizing age‑appropriate activities.
- Instructs students to improve academic, interpersonal, and daily living skills through a defined course of study.
- Maintains confidential and non‑confidential records (test scores, evaluations, IEPs) in compliance with administrative guidelines and legal requirements.
- Manages student behavior to create a safe and optimal learning environment.
- Monitors students in various settings (classroom, playground, field trips) to ensure safety and positivity.
- Participates in meetings (Professional Development, staff meetings, IEPs, Whole Faculty Study Groups) to gather and convey information required for performance.
- Prepares written materials (attendance, anecdotal records, IEPs, lesson plans) to document student progress and meet mandated requirements.
- Reports health and safety issues to administrative personnel or appropriate agencies (fights, suspected child or substance abuse, inappropriate behaviors) to maintain safety and comply with regulations.
- Responds to emergency situations to resolve immediate safety concerns or direct to appropriate personnel.
- Responds to inquiries from teachers, parents, administrators to resolve issues and provide information.
- Supports classroom teachers in implementing established curriculum and individual student plans.
- Performs other related duties as required or assigned.
- Education:
Bachelor’s degree in a job‑related subject, required. - Experience:
Job‑related experience with increasing levels of responsibility. - Certifications:
Special Education certification in Missouri for mild‑moderate disabilities (SLD, ED, , OHI, cross‑categorical) required. - Must maintain “Highly Qualified” status as defined by the Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education.
- Criminal background clearance satisfactory to the District.
- Knowledge of pertinent laws, codes, policies, personnel processes, teaching strategies, family collaboration, and child development stages.
