About the Role:
Reporting to the Faculty Services Manager, the Budget Officer provides expert financial support for the Faculty of Mathematics and Science, ensuring effective budget development, monitoring, and compliance with institutional policies. The Budget Officer combines analytical and operational responsibilities, including forecasting, variance analysis, transaction oversight, and teaching load reconciliation. The Budget Officer acts as the faculty’s primary financial resource, supporting academic leadership with data-driven insights and ensuring efficient financial operations.
The
Budget Officer, Faculty of Mathematics and Science
will:
Prepare financial forecasts and conduct variance analysis on actual-to-budget comparisons;Conduct financial analyses, projections and reporting on course enrolment, including low enrolment analysis;Investigate significant variances and provide actionable recommendations to improve performance;Maintain accurate and timely reporting for faculty leadership, including trimester projections and consolidated financial summaries;Perform financial analysis for faculty projects, and program accounts;Review and approve faculty financial transactions, ensuring adherence to university policies and funding requirements;Process journal entries, reconcile accounts and monitor deficit/ended accountsProvide guidance to faculty and staff on financial policies, expense categories, and best practices;Coordinate and prepare the faculty’s annual budget submission, working closely with academic units and administrative staff;Develop supporting schedules and templates for budget processes, ensuring accuracy and compliance with university guidelines;Provide financial input for Faculty planning initiatives and advise on budget impacts of operational decisions;Support special projects and initiatives, while providing finance and accounting expertise; andIdentify opportunities for process improvement and contribute to operational efficiency.Key
Skills and Experience:
An undergraduate degree in Accounting, Finance, Business Administration, or related discipline or a combination of education and experience;Demonstrated experience in financial analysis, budgeting, or accounting;Strong knowledge of financial systems, reporting tools, and Microsoft Excel;Skilled in budgeting, forecasting, and variance analysis with accuracy in financial reporting and compliance;Strong communication and interpersonal skills;Ability to collaborate effectively with faculty leadership, staff, and central services;Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and organizational skills;Ability to interpret and apply policies and provide guidance to stakeholders;Ensures accuracy in financial reporting and compliance.Preferred or Asset
