With the vision of supporting the values and mission of the Office of Civil Rights & Title IX, the Senior Specialist of Digital Accessibility will promote an inclusive and accessible digital university environment at the University of South Carolina. In partnership with and reporting to the Deputy ADA Coordinator, the Senior Specialist of Digital Accessibility provides strategic leadership for the University of South Carolina’s digital accessibility efforts, including the development of institutional standards, policies, and initiatives.
The Senior Specialist of Digital Accessibility also oversees and coordinates University‑wide efforts to promote and maintain accessible digital content and technology. The Senior Specialist of Digital Accessibility serves as a subject‑matter expert in digital accessibility technical standards, including accessible technologies, interpretation of WCAG guidelines, implementation of solutions to meet those guidelines, manual and automated testing, and documentation of accessibility compliance to support the accessibility and compliance of University digital assets with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), Sections 503 and 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973, and other federal and state laws and regulations pertaining to persons with disabilities.
The scope of responsibility includes faculty, staff, student‑employees, and students, as well as public access to programs and facilities.
- Masters, J.D. or Doctorate in related field;
Related training or certification through a nationally recognized organization. - Experience in higher education ADA digital accessibility compliance;
Familiarity with digital accessibility principles and tools (WCAG standards, assistive technologies, and web practices). - Direct experience and proven success with digital accessibility strategy and remediation.
- Experience using reports from automated testing platforms and being able to translate that to best practices for remediation.
- An intermediate level of being able to use accessible technology to test best practices.
- Direct involvement in prior large‑scale accessibility remediations and strategic planning initiatives
- Ability to maintain neutrality and work under stress.
- Demonstrated ability to collaborate with campus and University partners.
- Able to interpret federal, state, and local equal opportunity and nondiscrimination laws and regulations, including but not limited to Title VII, the ADA, Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act, and other applicable laws and regulations that prohibit harassment, discrimination, or retaliation.
- Demonstrated interpersonal skills, written skills, and presentation communication skills are required.
- Experience collaborating with others across departments and job levels, including reviewing work and offering feedback to high‑level stakeholders.
