PART I - SUMMARY OF CLASSIFICATION

This class is accountable for facilitating learning, academic achievement and personal development by providing instruction to students. The teacher develops and implements curriculum and lesson plans, utilizes technology to facilitate learning, and demonstrates an understanding of varying learning styles and the needs of a diverse student population.

PART II - MINIMUM KNOWLEDGE,

SKILLS AND ABILITIES

A.

Education and Experience
  • Possession of a Bachelor’s degree from an accredited university or college.
  • Background investigation may be conducted prior to appointment.
B. Credentials

Employment is conditional upon a valid Connecticut State Board of Education teaching certificate/endorsement 042 Art, PK–12.

C. Licenses, Certifications and Other Requirements
  • May be required to hold a current Motor Vehicle operator’s license.
  • Must complete all State CEU requirements for re-certification.
D. Knowledge,

Skills and Abilities
  • Considerable knowledge of core curriculum areas, including art and related subjects.
  • Knowledge of educational philosophy, teaching methods, best practices, and research.
  • Knowledge of child development, classroom management, instructional technologies, and learner outcomes.
  • Understanding of learning theory, student styles, and multiple intelligences.
  • Knowledge of multicultural, gender, and disability fair curriculum concepts.
  • Knowledge of Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS) and Scientific Research Based Interventions (SRBI).
  • Some knowledge of community resources.
  • Excellent listening and communication skills.
  • Skills in classroom management, presentation, human relations, conflict management, and report development.
  • Ability to interact effectively with students, parents, staff, and community members from diverse backgrounds.
  • Ability to adapt teaching styles and apply PBIS/SRBI principles.
  • Skill in evaluating and presenting student performance to foster higher achievement.
  • Ability to multi-task, plan lesson plans based on district and school goals, provide core instruction, use technology, work in cooperative learning environments, and collaborate with diverse individuals.
PART III - POSITION SUPERVISES

May direct the work of paraprofessionals.

PART IV - ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
  • Advise, assist, and supervise students in internships, volunteering, community service projects, training stations, and employment opportunities; support participation in district, state, and national competitions.
  • Evaluate student performance through examinations, assignments, and other methods; maintain required records and submit reports, including report cards, to principal or administrators; assess academic, behavioral, and vocational needs; facilitate district-wide testing.
  • Implement district, school, and program objectives and standards; develop, adapt, and update curriculum; create and execute lesson plans.
  • Maintain communication with parents, schedule conferences, recruit students into classes and specialized programs, and maintain classroom databases.
  • Participate in staff development and professional growth activities; mentor new teachers; maintain current certifications.
  • Enforce school rules, manage discipline, ensure student safety, and maintain an appropriate learning environment.
  • Perform additional duties such as enforcing health and hygiene guidelines, coordinating co‑curricular and extracurricular activities, participating in bus, lunch, and playground duties, attending staff meetings, serving on committees, managing budgets, assisting grant writing, and organizing student performances.
  • Provide instruction in core, age‑appropriate curriculum; assess initial knowledge; use instructional resources and technologies; adapt methodology for diverse learners; maintain instructional equipment; team teach when appropriate.
  • Assist special‑needs students and special education teachers in determining environments, completing IEPs, and coordinating mainstreaming; participate in Planning and Placement Teams.
  • Perform related duties as requested.
