Position: Head of the Laboratory for Neutron and Muon Instrumentation (LIN)

The Paul Scherrer Institute PSI is the largest research institute for natural and engineering sciences within Switzerland. We perform cutting‑edge research in the fields of future technologies, energy and climate, health innovation and fundamentals of nature. Therefore, about one quarter of our staff are post‑docs, post‑graduates or apprentices. Altogether, PSI employs 2300 people.

LIN is one of the five laboratories of PSI Center for Neutron and Muon Sciences (CNM) and consists of around 60 staff members across technical, scientific and education roles, organized into six groups. The mission of LIN is to provide technical and scientific support for state‑of‑the‑art experiments using neutron and muon beams produced by the three large‑scale research facilities CHRISP, SINQ and SuS.

These facilities are scientifically exploited by the CNM Laboratories for Particle Physics (LTP), Neutron Scattering and Imaging (LNS), and Muon Spin Spectroscopy (LMU). In cooperation with these laboratories, LIN develops, implements and coordinates instrumentation projects. LIN also plays a key role in delivering several CNM large‑scale projects, including contributions to the IMPACT, the Quantum Matter and Materials Discovery Center (QMMC), as well as the preparation of the SINQ++ project.

The head of the PSI Center for Neutron and Muon Sciences is looking for the

Head of the Laboratory for Neutron and Muon Instrumentation (LIN)
  • Technical, scientific and personnel management of the laboratory, including budget responsibility
  • Long‑term planning of the laboratory's activities, development of the strategy, drafting of project proposals, and acquisition of third‑party funding
  • Coordination and project management for large infrastructure projects such as IMPACT, QMMC, and SINQ++
  • Planning and carrying out your own research in neutron and muon science and instrumentation
  • Presentation of results or instrument/method developments in the form of publications, reports, and presentations at symposia and specialist events
  • Establishing and managing collaborations with external academic and industrial partners
  • Supporting the Center Head in the strategic implementation of the research objectives of the PSI Center for Neutron and Muon Sciences
Your profile
  • You are an internationally recognized scientist/engineer with extensive research experience in the development of particle beam and beam line instrumentation, preferably with neutrons and muons
  • Beyond scientific expertise, you exhibit strong leadership qualities and the desire to continuously develop them. You thrive in collaborative and diverse environments and provide leadership by enabling our students, postdocs, as well as technical and scientific staff to succeed
  • You have technical flair and sound technical understanding
  • You have experience leading large line organizations and/or large projects or collaborations
  • Experience in engineering, especially in relation to nuclear facilities/spallation sources is an asset
