Responsibilities:The RN's practice is guided by the ANA Standard for Professional Nurse and Code of Ethics. The RN has knowledge of professional nursing principles, practices, concepts, and procedures as applied to the care of the patient population served. The RN records patients' medical history and symptoms, helps perform diagnostic tests and analyzes results, operates medical equipment, administers treatment and medications, and assists with patient follow‑up and rehabilitation.
The RN helps establish a care plan or contributes to an existing plan. The plan may include activities such as administering medication, checking dosages, maintaining intravenous lines, giving therapies, observing and recording patient responses, and consulting with physicians and other healthcare clinicians. The RN teaches patients and families to manage illnesses or injuries, explains post‑treatment and home‑care needs, dietary and exercise programs, and self‑administration of medication and therapy.
The RN provides direction to licensed practical nurses and nursing aides and delegates when appropriate. The RN supports efforts to advance clinical knowledge and skills, precepts new hires and students, and assists them in completing competency tasks. The RN continually enhances knowledge in nursing management and care of patient problems and conditions.
- Collect health data systematically, prioritize collection by patient condition and involve family. Analyze assessment data to determine diagnoses and use nursing diagnosis to develop, implement, evaluate, and revise an appropriate, family‑centered, developmentally and culturally relevant plan of care.
- Identify individualized expected outcomes based on the patient’s specific health problems. Develop plans of care that are evidence‑based, provide continuity, and are family‑centered.
- Implement interventions in the plan of care, initiate treatments, medications, and emergency/resuscitative measures using standing orders, policies, and procedures. Provide nursing care for physical, emotional, spiritual, and social‑cultural needs using a family‑centered approach.
- Evaluate progress toward outcomes, document observations, nursing interventions, therapeutic measures, and other relevant data in a retrievable format, and continually assess quality and effectiveness of the care plan.
- Evaluate own nursing practice against professional standards, statutes, and system policies; maintain current knowledge.
- Integrate ethical principles into practice and enhance knowledge of cultural and diversity needs.
- Collaborate with coworkers to develop and evaluate evidence‑based standards of care, identify changes, and facilitate implementation of best practices. Participate in professional development and mentorship, fostering a quality practice environment.
- Coordinate with the multidisciplinary team to assess, plan, implement, and evaluate patient care delivery. Collaborate with patient, family, and other providers.
- Use evidence‑based research to improve nursing practice and patient outcomes, design, create, and apply research.
- Consider safety, effectiveness, and cost when planning and delivering patient care, utilizing resources efficiently.

All Diploma and ADN hires must complete a BSN within 60 months of hire OR have 5 or more years of RN experience (direct or indirect) at time of hire.
Required - Associates or Diploma in Nursing:
All staff who have direct responsibility for the care of stroke patients, please refer to the addendum for stroke specific education requirements – PRIOR TO START.
Required - Bachelor in nursing (BSN) – Preferred
- Other >10 months med‑surg or acute specialty setting.
Required - 1 year RN experience for all float positions.
Required
Certifications:
- Basic Life Support (BLS) – Certification. BLS training course C and unit‑specific certification as required by specialty area DOP.
Required - Registered Nurse (RN) – State or compact state licensure in Arizona upon hire.
Required - National certification for unit specific patient population. Preferred
