Job Description

Transportation Technology positions at the Tilden Maintenance office, Tilden, Texas.

Position Overview

As a Transportation Tech, you will work with a crew and a variety of equipment to maintain roadways and keep them clear and safe for the traveling public. The maintenance office is responsible for numerous state and county roadways, including IH‑37 and FM roads.

Responsibilities

Perform routine transportation operations and maintenance support work such as roadway maintenance and repair, light and heavy equipment operation, preventive equipment maintenance, traffic control, and public assistance during emergencies. Typical duties include:

Transportation Maintenance Tech I
  • Assists in identifying, repairing, and installing signs, delineators, and mailbox supports; performs basic welding as needed.
  • Assists local law enforcement at accident sites and helps stranded motorists.
  • Assists with traffic control: places cones, warning signs, and barricades; flags traffic; determines placement and installs devices.
  • Operates heavy equipment such as front‑end loaders, haul trucks, draglines, shovels, and dump trucks.
  • Operates light equipment such as front‑end loaders (¼–1½ cubic yards), pneumatic rollers, rotary brooms, spreader boxes, backhoes, street sweepers, and mowers.
  • Performs preventive maintenance inspections, routine servicing, and minor repairs on equipment; completes required reports (time‑keeping, inventory, accident forms).
  • Sands or cleans bridges and roads, posts warning signs, and assists during emergency situations such as floods, tornadoes, hurricanes, snowstorms, accidents, and hazardous material spills.
  • Performs other job responsibilities as assigned.
Transportation Maintenance Tech II
  • In addition to the duties listed above: inspects traffic control devices and their placement at construction sites for compliance with specifications, safety laws, and the Texas Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices.
  • Maintains construction project records and/or bridge inspection records; processes related paperwork; reviews files for compliance with the bridge inspection Manual of Procedures.
  • Performs highly skilled roadway repairs and erects/repairs guard rails, highway markers, and signs; hauls materials and equipment to job sites.
  • Maintains picnic areas, rest areas, rights‑of‑way, maintenance yards, and comfort stations.
  • Moves and picks up litter and roadway debris; mows rights‑of‑way and rest areas; performs plant and landscape maintenance including trimming trees and brush.
  • Operates complex heavy equipment such as motor graders, large excavators, heavy bulldozers, cranes, herbicide trucks, asphalt paving machines, self‑propelled asphalt distributors, and profiling/milling machines.
  • Identifies, repairs, and installs signs and delineators; performs welding; and uses/moves equipment, tools, materials, and products.
Transportation Maintenance Tech III
  • In addition to the duties listed above: serves as a crew project lead ensuring work meets project specifications.
  • Trains other employees.
  • Provides ongoing support to local law enforcement at accident sites and assists stranded motorists.
  • Inspects barricades to ensure compliance with sticky‑sheet standards.
Qualifications

Education and Experience:

  • TMT I:
    No experience required.
  • TMT II:
    Minimum 1 year of experience in transportation engineering support, roadway maintenance, construction inspection, heavy equipment operation, or related work.
  • TMT III:
    Minimum 2 years of experience in the above areas.

Licenses and

Certifications:

  • Valid driver’s license (state vehicle). Commercial Class "A" Driver’s License with an "N" endorsement within 120 days of employment for TMT I/II; required at time of application for TMT III.
  • Any other related certifications and technical training may be substituted on a year‑per‑year basis.
Salary
  • Minimum: $40,918.00 (Transportation Maintenance Tech I)
  • Maximum: $71,055.00 (Transportation Maintenance Tech III)
  • Pay Basis:
    Yearly, Non‑exempt FLSA status.
