Job Description

Transportation Maintenance Technician I or II (highway maintenance worker) – Sterling City (2601233). Maintain 715 miles of US and State highways, farm‑to‑market roads across Sterling and Glasscock counties. Key duties include roadway level‑up, seal coat, guard rail installation, traffic control, equipment operation, and emergency response.

Work Schedule

Monday – Thursday, 7:00 a.m. – 5:30 p.m. (day shift). Travel required for 25 % of the time.

Pay

Transportation Maintenance Technician I (A16): $40,918 – $61,130 annually.
Transportation Maintenance Technician II (A17): $42,976 – $64,469 annually.
Monthly starting salary: $4,100 – $4,500.

Responsibilities – Transportation Maintenance Technician I
  • Assist local law enforcement at accident sites and aid stranded motorists.
  • Place and remove traffic control devices, and flag traffic.
  • Repair highways, guard rails, markers and signs; haul materials to job sites.
  • Maintain picnic and rest areas, rights‑of‑way, maintenance yards and comfort stations.
  • Operate light equipment (front‑end loader – one cubic yard, pneumatic roller, rotary broom, spreader box, backhoe, street sweeper, mower).
  • Perform preventive maintenance inspections, routine servicing, and minor repairs on equipment; complete required reports.
  • Handle emergency situations such as floods, tornadoes, hurricanes, snowstorms, accidents and hazardous material spills.
  • Carry out additional duties as assigned.
Additional Duties – Transportation Maintenance Technician II
  • Operate heavy equipment (front‑end loader – one and a half cubic yards, tractor‑trailer haul truck, large dragline, shovel, paint strip, dump truck).
Minimum Qualifications
  • No experience required for Tech I; at least one year of relevant experience for Tech II.
  • Experience may be satisfied by full‑time or pro‑rated part‑time equiva‑lent in transportation engineering support, roadway maintenance, construction inspection or heavy equipment operation.
  • Substitutions available for experience through related technical training from an accredited institution.
Licenses & Certifications
  • Valid driver’s license; position requires operating a state vehicle.
  • Commercial Class A or equivalent CDL “A” license with “N” endorsement; must be obtained within 180 days of employment.
