Transport Maint Crew Chief - Sterling City Maintenance Office (2601235).

Position Information

TxDOT's San Angelo District is looking for a Transportation Maintenance Crew Chief in the Sterling City Maintenance Office
. This entry-level leadership position supports roadway maintenance in Sterling and Glasscock counties. Candidates coordinate equipment, materials, and personnel for projects and collaborate closely with the maintenance section supervisor.

Work Schedule

Monday – Thursday, 7:00 a.m. – 5:30 p.m.

Salary

Minimum Salary: $54,278.00 – Maximum Salary: $87,046.00 – Anticipated Starting Salary: $5,200 – $5,500 monthly.

Responsibilities
  • Leads a crew of transportation maintenance technicians and equipment operators performing skilled maintenance activities.
  • Reports to a maintenance section supervisor and assists in administration of the maintenance section.
  • Responds to emergency notifications as needed, including weather and accident situations.
  • Estimates and gathers necessary materials and equipment for assignments.
  • Inspects roads en route to and from job sites, reporting problems to supervisors.
  • Maintains records on materials, equipment, and employee time sheets.
  • Monitors material testing and inventory of roadway maintenance materials.
  • Operates light and heavy equipment and performs basic maintenance on equipment.
  • Oversees the work of designated maintenance inspectors and sign technicians.
  • Schedules daily work assignments, provides technical support, presents operational updates to the supervisor, and approves leave requests for operational coverage.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications Education

High School Graduate or General Education Equivalent.

Experience

Five (5) years of roadway maintenance related work (full‑time or prorated part‑time). Related college education or technical training may substitute for experience, one year for one year.

Licenses and Certifications
  • Valid driver’s license and Class 'A' Commercial Driver's License (CDL) at the time of application.
  • Required "N" tanker endorsement and no transmission restriction within 60 calendar days of employment.
  • Familiarity with intermodal transportation engineering construction and maintenance work.
  • Knowledge of the Texas Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices.
  • Incident management procedures.
  • Applicability of industry safety standards and guidelines.
  • Operating light and heavy highway equipment.
  • Public relations skills for maintaining effective relationships with internal and external stakeholders.
  • Ability to lead, assign, review, and monitor the work of others.
  • Coordinating labor, materials, and equipment.
  • Administrative support practices, including writing, editing, report writing, meeting notes, and records management.
  • Maintaining safe working relationships with others.
Physical Requirements and Working Conditions
  • Exposed to extreme cold and heat; temperatures below 32°F or above 100°F for more than one hour.
  • Noise and vibration exposure.
  • Hazards from moving vehicles, mechanical parts, high places, heat, and chemicals.
  • Must wear protective gear (respirator, hard hat, etc.).
  • Medium work involves lifting objects up to 50 lbs at a time and frequently lifting or carrying up to 25 lbs.
  • Prolonged standing periods.
  • Visual acuity required for operating machines and motor vehicles.
  • Pre‑employment physical examination required; position deemed physically demanding.
  • Must pass a drug test prior to employment; subject to random testing and no medical marijuana exemption.
  • Work during emergency situations after hours, on weekends or holidays.
  • Work hours beyond 8 a.m.–5 p.m. as needed.
  • Work outdoors in inclement weather.
  • Wear employer‑provided PPE and comply with all safety requirements.
  • Attend work regularly and observe approved hours.
  • Must be able to report to duty within 60 minutes of notification on a 24‑hour basis to respond to emergencies.
