GFT’s Environmental Team
GFT  is seeking an  Environmental Scientist  to join our Practice or CBG Team in  Toronto ! This role follows a hybrid work model, requiring regular attendance at our  Toronto  office.

GFT’s Environmental team delivers integrated planning, permitting, and compliance solutions that support infrastructure development across North America. Our team guides clients through Environmental Assessments and permitting processes, ecological and regulatory assessments, and environmental remediation efforts on projects that span transportation, power, water, and facilities markets. From environmental approvals to complex planning solutions, GFT helps clients protect resources, manage risk, and meet regulatory requirements with confidence.

What you’ll be challenged to do:
The job incumbent will supervise, manage and conduct environmental site assessments (Phase 1/2 ESAs), environmental due diligence studies, excess soil management, contaminated site investigations, and remediation for transit, transportation, and other infrastructure projects.

In this capacity, the successful candidate will be responsible for the following:

Plan, manage, and execute environmental due diligence/contaminated site assessment programs for infrastructure projects, such as Phase 1/2 ESAs, Assessments of Past Uses (APUs), Sampling and Analysis Plans (SAPs), and Soil Characterization Reports (SCRs).

Conduct Phase 1 and Phase 2 Environmental Site Assessments in accordance with Canadian Standards Association (CSA) standards and Ontario Regulation 153/04.

Conduct APUs, SAPs, SCRs, and other excess soil management work in accordance with Ontario Regulation 406/19.

Coordinate, design and execute field work programs to support environmental contamination studies/Phase 1/2 ESAs.

Manage reporting aspects for due diligence environmental contamination studies (soil, groundwater etc.) and Phase 1/2 ESAs.

Manage (and, if needed on rare occasion, carry out) field work such as supervising geo-environmental drillers, soil sampling, logging soil core, supervising the installation of monitoring wells, development of monitoring wells, hydraulic conductivity testing, and groundwater sampling.

Perform project management and coordination duties to deliver exceptional products on time and within budget.

Provide leadership and training to junior team members, and work collaboratively with other intermediate and senior team members.

Liaise with clients, regulatory agencies, authorities having jurisdiction, and other consultants as required.

Support business development pursuits, including assisting with proposal preparation, and reviewing sub-consultant proposals.

Apply the best available science and engineering practices.

What you will bring to our firm:

Bachelor’s Degree (or higher) in a relevant discipline such as environmental science, environmental engineering, hydrogeology or geology.

6+ years of experience in the field of environmental science or engineering in Ontario.

Proficiency and experience in applying and ensuring compliance with relevant procedures and environmental regulatory requirements associated with Ontario Regulations 153/04 and 406/19.

Working knowledge and expertise with applicable CSA principles, practices and requirements including CAN/CSA-Z768-01 (R2022), CAN/CSA-Z769-00 (R2023), etc.

Demonstrated experience in carrying out Phase 1 and Phase 2 Environmental Site Assessments, including designing and executing field work programs to support environmental site investigations.

Aptitude for project management with excellent attention to detail and ability to problem solve.

Ability to read and interpret design and construction drawings and supporting technical reports for major and complex undertakings/projects.

Willing to travel to project sites, as required, to complete necessary field investigations and data collection.

Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications, specifically Outlook, Teams, Excel, PowerPoint, and Word.

Valid driver’s license in Ontario.
