About the position

The Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering in the Faculty of Engineering, at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU) announces the following vacant position in coastal engineering.

We have a vacancy for an Associate Professor position in the field of coastal engineering related to numerical modelling of wave propagation, hydromechanics of coastal water waves as well as hydrodynamics of wave interaction with coastal structures. The position will be connected to the Marine Civil Engineering group of the department, which has research activities in the fields of coastal, Arctic and offshore wind engineering.

As part of NTNU’s efforts within the area of digitalization, the associate professor will lead research on strategic topics in the field of coastal engineering related to numerical modelling of coastal wave hydrodynamics for harbor conditions, coastal structure design and coastal sediment processes. The research group is also involved in coastal engineering aspects of aquaculture and offshore wind engineering and the candidate should participate in those research activities. At the Marine Civil Engineering group, the open-source hydrodynamics digital framework REEF3D is developed which is a corner stone for the group’s research activities within coastal engineering. In addition, it is used in interdisciplinary research collaborations with the geotechnical and hydraulic engineering groups of the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering.

We are looking for a motivated candidate who has relevant teaching experience, a proven scientific track record and management experience from research projects related to coastal engineering

You will report to the head of department.

Duties of the position


Contribute to teaching in the following courses: TVM4116 Hydromechanics basic course for bachelor students in Norwegian, TBA4265 Arctic and Marine Civil Engineering for bachelor students in English and TBA4270 Coastal Engineering for master students in English. In addition, a commitment to life-long learning is expected.
Student supervision (bachelor, master, and PhD level).
Develop and lead research projects to strengthen the coastal engineering competence in the group.
Contribute within the field of coastal engineering to the Center for the Green Shift in the Built Environment hosted at IBM.
Contribute to development of the groups international study program within coastal engineering.
Contribute to the digitalization efforts within the field of coastal engineering.
Contribute to the overall research goals of the Marine Civil Engineering group through research proposals and strategic project development.
Collaboration with industry and end users to develop research projects with high societal relevance and scientific quality.


Required selection criteria

Associate Professor:

The position of Associate Professor requires that you meet the criteria in the Regulations concerning appointment and promotion to teaching and research posts section 1-4.


Your PhD, or academic work of the same scope and quality, must be within coastal engineering or equivalent  
Very good written and oral English language skills
Have a strong background in coastal engineering, particularly in numerical modelling of wave propagation
Experience with numerical modeling of the hydromechanics of coastal water waves and the hydrodynamics of wave interaction with coastal structures


You must document relevant basic competence for teaching and supervision at university/higher education-level, s. If this cannot be documented, you are required to complete an approved course in university teaching within two years of commencement. NTNU offers qualifying courses.

It is a prerequisite that within three years of appointment, new employees who do not speak a Scandinavian language can demonstrate skills in Norwegian or another Scandinavian language equivalent to level three in the course for Norwegian for speakers of other languages at the Department of Language and Literature at NTNU.

Salary and conditions

In a position as Associate Professor (code 1011) you will normally be remunerated from gross NOK 550 000 to NOK 770 000 per year, depending on qualifications and seniority. From the salary, 2% is deducted as a contribution to the Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund.

The engagement is to be made in accordance with the regulations in force concerning State Employees and Civil Servants, and the acts relating to Control of the Export of Strategic Goods, Services and Technology. Candidates who by assessment of the application and attachment are seen to conflict with the criteria in the latter law will be prohibited from recruitment to NTNU. After the appointment, you must assume that there may be changes in the area of work.

It is a prerequisite that you can be present at and accessible to the institution daily.

In the assessment of the best-qualified applicant, we will emphasize education, experience and personal suitability as well as your motivation for the position. You will be expected to deliver high-quality teaching at undergraduate and postgraduate levels, and undertake supervision of Masters and Doctoral candidates. Evaluation of these skills will be based on documented experience and relevant teaching qualifications. Applicants with teaching experience at university level are preferred. Quality and breadth of the teaching qualifications will be evaluated.
