Job Description & How to Apply Below
Position: Staff Electrical Engineer, Battery
About Rivian Rivian is on a mission to keep the world adventurous forever. This goes for the emissions-free Electric Adventure Vehicles we build, and the curious, courageous souls we seek to attract. As a company, we constantly challenge what's possible, never simply accepting what has always been done. We reframe old problems, seek new solutions and operate comfortably in areas that are unknown.

Our backgrounds are diverse, but our team shares a love of the outdoors and a desire to protect it for future generations. Responsibilities Own key parts of the HV Battery and BMS electrical architecture Lead design and development of the HV Battery and BMS electrical architecture across prototype and production‑intent packs, from proof of concept and requirements through analysis/simulation and validation.

Define and refine key HV Battery/BMS elements: bus topology and protection, contractors/fuses/current sensors, precharge and HV protection schemes, sensing chains and isolation, and hooks needed for controls and diagnostics. Analyze and optimize HV bus behavior (capacitance, inductance, resistance) to control ripple, manage EMI/EMC, and ensure robust operation across operating modes and variants. Work with controls engineers to ensure the battery pack has the right signals, limits, and safety strategies for both prototyping and production algorithms.

Turn proof of concept and field learnings into robust production designs Plan and execute evaluations of HV Battery/BMS electrical roadmap items on prototype hardware, and summarize results and recommendations. Convert prototype and field learnings into requirements, diagnostics concepts, DFMEA inputs, and design guidelines for the HV bus, HV components, and BMS sensing/controls. Partner with Systems, Functional Safety, and Product Excellence teams to close the loop on high‑risk failure modes, driving design‑side prevent recurrence changes into future packs and architectures.

Execute lab and test work to de‑risk architectures Own or support bench and pack‑level experiments for key HV Battery/BMS functions (e.g., precharge and contactor schemes, HV measurement and isolation behavior, wireless BMS/RF robustness). Work closely with Test and Validation, Mechanical Engineering, and supplier teams to debug test issues and cleanly separate HW, SW, and setup problems. Qualifications 7+ years of work experience in Battery/Automotive/Aerospace/related industries At least a bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering or related field.

Strong fundamentals in analog and mixed‑signal design as applied to HV batteries:
Voltage, current, and temperature sensing chains. Signal conditioning, ADC considerations, noise and accuracy trade‑offs. Working knowledge of BMS architectures:
Cell monitoring ICs, pack monitoring ICs, isolation, in centralized or distributed topologies. Communication paths (wired and wireless) between cell monitoring components and master controllers. Practical experience with schematic capture and PCB design, including the ability to execute and/or review or guide placement/routing for HV and LV circuits. Hands‑on experience with:
Lab equipment (oscilloscopes, logic analyzers, power supplies, loads). Hardware debug and root‑cause analysis in complex embedded systems. Familiarity with:
Requirements and issue tracking tools (e.g., Jama/Flow, Jira). Structured problem‑solving methods (Fishbone, 8D, FMEA concepts). Strong written and verbal communication skills, including:
Clear design and test documentation. Ability to lead or contribute to design reviews and cross‑functional discussions. Demonstrated ability to work independently in ambiguous, fast‑moving environments while collaborating across SW, Systems, ME, Test, and suppliers. Pay Disclosure The salary range for this role is USD 154, for California based applicants. This is the lowest to highest salary we in good faith believe we would pay for this role at the time of this posting.

An employee's position within the salary range will be based on several factors including, but not limited to, specific competencies, relevant education, qualifications, certifications, experience, skills,…
