Main Purpose and Function

The Graphic Designer provides graphic design services for the City of Vancouver Civic Engagement and Communications team and other business units.

Key Contacts and Reporting Relationships

The position reports to the Associate Director, Communications and provides graphic design support for a wide range of projects and initiatives as part of communications plans supported by the Civic Engagement and Communications team, and in direct support of business areas across the City. Specific

Duties /Responsibilities Develops visual identities for larger projects and initiatives, which may include development of a comprehensive suite of materials for different communications channels.

Executes the design and creation of print, social media, web and other digital materials for multiple departments, including sourcing of images, creation of custom illustrations and infographics, and managing production via the internal print shop and outside suppliers.

Advises on and ensures that business units follow the City’s visual standards guide; provides suggestions and feedback and responds to questions.

Attends meetings with clients to discuss ongoing or upcoming projects; brainstorms and provides solutions to creative challenges to ensure the successful completion of projects.

Provides advice to the Civic Engagement and Communications and Digital Services teams on design trends for website and social media projects.

Ensures designed materials are accessible for those who may have different abilities, including information translated into multiple languages.

Other duties/responsibilities as assigned. Minimum Qualification


Education and


A diploma from a recognized post-secondary institution plus considerable related experience, or an equivalent combination of training and experience.

Considerable experience in a creative publishing environment preferred.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

Considerable knowledge of graphic design, desktop publishing and layout techniques.

Considerable knowledge of visual identity creation and branding.

Sound knowledge of creating accessible designs for both print and digital.

Advanced PC computer skills and a professional knowledge of the latest graphic design software (specifically InDesign, Photoshop and Illustrator).

Ability to create designs for print and online materials that tell a compelling story, especially for complex topics.

Ability to manage multiple projects at once via online job request ticketing system, and consistently meet deadlines.

Ability to develop and execute design and production concepts appropriate to client needs and projects.

Ability to provide graphic design advice and services to employees and managers.

Ability to work with minimal supervision.

Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with a variety of internal and external contacts.

Knowledge of designing optimized graphics for social media networks an asset. Business Unit/Department:
