Job Summary

In collaboration with the multidisciplinary team, performs assessments, plans, implements and provides foot care to community members. The Foot Care Nurse operates in accordance with the competency guidelines and full scope of practice within the Standards of Practice, and according to OKIB policies and procedures.

Reporting Structure

Reports to Community Health Nurse, dotted line to the Director of Health.

Job Duties and Responsibilities
  • Responsible for foot care assessments and consultations
  • Delivers approved foot care services through planned home visits, clinics, and workshops
  • Attend to clients with respect and dignity
  • Identify and report client care concerns to the Home Community Care Nurse or Physician/Care provider
  • Remain up-to-date with the best practice guidelines and education in relation to Nursing Foot Care
  • Follows strict infection control standards for cleaning and sterilizing instruments; follows health and safety guidelines while providing foot care
  • Completes nursing health assessment including an assessment of the feet and lower extremities
  • Nail cutting and filing (nail reduction)
  • Management and care of corns, calluses, ingrown toenails, fungal treatment and nail restoration
  • Works with clients to put together a plan that is focused on preventative measures to promote self care
  • Ongoing nursing assessment and evaluation
  • Identifies the need for more specialized treatments and referring to the appropriate resources (i.e. Podiatrist, Pedorthist, physician, wound care nurse, etc.)
  • Promote foot health and mobility, community resources and family involvement
  • Execute preventative screening and education
  • Demonstrates care techniques, and methods of disease prevention and rehabilitation
  • Encourages healthy lifestyles by assisting other staff with health promotion activities
  • Visits palliative care clients
  • Ensure total confidentiality is maintained for all client files, records, and correspondence
  • Sets priorities for client care for individuals
  • Promotes the maintenance of a safe and healthy environment in homes and the community at large
  • All persons employed by the Okanagan Indian Band may be required to assist the Band in providing emergency services. Duties assigned during an emergency may differ from regular duties.
  • Participate in community events and team meetings as requested
Administrative Duties
  • Conduct charting and care planning
  • Liaise with care providers as each client requires including physicians, Interior Health, physiotherapists, patient care and dieticians
  • Collaborate with other nursing staff to implement the prevention, health promotion, and other programs identified in community health nursing planning
  • Redirects to appropriate client care referrals

    Reporting and maintaining statistics as required for funding purposes
  • Participates in educational opportunities to maintain and enhance competencies
  • Performs other duties as required
Health Promotion & Education
  • Provide clients and caregivers with information specific to optimum foot health, changes to the foot, footwear and the importance of exercise and proper nutrition
  • Educate Diabetic Foot Care
  • Providing appropriate educational handouts
