Located in Greater Boston, Mass Bay is a comprehensive, open-access community college, offering associate degrees and certificate programs on three campuses in Wellesley Hills, Framingham, and Ashland, Massachusetts.

Position Summary

The ideal candidate will join a vibrant educational community, and have a desire and ability to serve a population of students with various needs and backgrounds. The Chief of Police/Director of Campus Safety is responsible for the overall organization and management of the safety, law enforcement, and security operations of the College, helping to ensure the safety of the campus community, its visitors, and the college property.

The Chief provides leadership and management of all administrative, personnel, and financial responsibilities for a 24‑hour, 365‑days‑per‑year operation for the College’s three campus centers (Wellesley Hills, Framingham, and Ashland) and will function as the College’s Chief of Police. The Chief supervises campus police officers, institutional security officers, contract security, and any other department employees.

Key Responsibilities and Duties
  • Develop and manage a comprehensive approach to security management to include short‑ and long‑range plans and objectives to improve departmental services to the campus community.
  • Plan, establish, and monitor public safety, security, and emergency procedures appropriate for a state educational institution, to ensure compliance with local, state and federal policies, practices, laws, and regulations, and to help ensure the safety of employees, students, faculty, and visitors.
  • Engage in recruitment of a police department, oversee ongoing staff development and training, as well as staffing, hiring, disciplinary action, evaluation, and promotion.
  • Oversee the planning and preparation of work schedules and payroll reporting, assignments, and patrols of campus, including enforcement of traffic and parking regulations.
  • Plan training schedule for campus officers to ensure they meet required continuing education standards.
  • Develop, implement, and regularly review emergency action plans, procedures, and training; collaborate with College leadership to establish policies and ensure coordinated, effective responses to planned and unplanned emergencies and community needs; serve as the department’s responsible authority during emergency response situations; and issue crime and emergency alerts as appropriate.
  • Monitor campus buildings and grounds for safety issues and work collaboratively with the Facilities Department to respond to campus emergencies and maintain a safe overall physical environment.
  • Collaborate with local, regional, and state law enforcement and emergency response department/agencies, as well as other institutions of higher education, concerning areas of mutual interest such as training, safety, best practices, grant applications, emergency response, and crime prevention.
  • Work collaboratively with the police departments of Wellesley, Framingham, and Ashland; review and ensure MOUs are adhered to and propose changes as needed and/or required by state law.
  • Oversee security concerns of college buildings and property, including security technology and routine security inspections on all campuses.
  • Design, implement, and review safety and security awareness and crime prevention programs for students, faculty, staff, and visitors.
  • Develop and manage the departmental budget, including oversight of major contracts such as contract security, in support of institutional fiscal priorities.
