6th Grade Math Teacher

1.0 FTE, Continuing

Orchard Middle School

Beginning the  School Year

Position Overview

We are looking for a dynamic, passionate, and student-centered 6th Grade Math Teacher to join our middle school team. The ideal candidate understands that 6th grade is a pivotal transitional year for students moving from elementary to middle school. Your role goes far beyond delivering a math curriculum; you will transform math anxiety into confidence, empowering students to become problem-solvers with a true growth mindset.

We are looking for an educator who loves the middle school journey and knows how to bridge the gap between abstract concepts and real-world, concrete understanding for young learners.

Key Responsibilities
  • Instruction & Curriculum Delivery:
Plan, prepare, and deliver engaging, standards-based math lessons that cover core 6th‑grade concepts like data analysis, geometry, ratios, and algebraic thinking.
  • Differentiated Learning:
Recognize that students enter 6th grade at vastly different mathematical baselines. Create scaffolded lessons that support struggling learners while extending challenges for advanced students.
  • Classroom Management:
Establish a safe, inclusive, and structured classroom culture rooted in mutual respect and high expectations.
  • Assessment & Data-Driven Instruction:
Utilize both formative and summative assessments to gauge student understanding, provide timely feedback, and adjust instructional strategies accordingly.
  • Collaboration:

Actively participate in professional learning communities (PLCs), grade‑level team meetings, and vertical alignment discussions with 5th and 7th‑grade teachers.
  • Community Communication:
Maintain open, proactive communication with parents and guardians regarding student progress, achievements, and areas for growth.
Preferred Qualities
  • Previous experience teaching middle school students.
  • A sense of humor, patience, and a genuine enjoyment of early adolescent development.
  • Experience implementing social-emotional learning (SEL) strategies in the classroom.
  • Bilingual communication skills are preferred.
Qualifications

Valid Washington state certification with Math endorsement. Ability to instruct all levels of math. Evidence of exemplary human relation skills, organizational and planning skills. Ability to work effectively with students, parents, and staff. Team player with an understanding of the needs of high school‑aged students. Preferred:
Experience teaching math to middle school students and using Agile Minds Intensified Algebra. Attendance and punctuality are important functions of this position.
