Position Title: Distribution Field Technician
Location: Wheeling, WV
Position Status: 6 month contract to hire
Pay Rate: $20/hr for the first 6 months
Vehicle: Must have a personal vehicle and be reimbursed for mileage.
We are seeking a motivated Utility Field Technician to join our team in Wheeling, WV. This entry‑level role is an excellent opportunity for professionals interested in utility design, CAD drafting, or GIS who want to gain valuable field experience. Technicians will support design and engineering teams by collecting accurate field data, mapping infrastructure, and documenting utility equipment.
This position requires a high level of self‑motivation, the ability to work independently outdoors in all weather conditions, and a commitment to safety. Successful candidates will have experience in utility or telecom environments, familiarity with power poles and related equipment, and strong communication skills.
Key Responsibilities- Collect and record field data, measurements, and equipment inventory for use in utility design and engineering documentation.
- Perform field reconnaissance, mapping, staking, and photography to support project requirements.
- Correctly identify and document utility equipment, power poles, fiber, and telecom infrastructure with minimal supervision.
- Operate field tools and technology including GPS receivers, handheld data collection units, digital cameras, and laser range finders.
- Ensure data accuracy, using proper standards, symbols, and documentation practices.
- Work independently in outdoor environments, traveling between locations daily with minimal office time.
- Support power restoration efforts during natural disaster events, as needed.
- Adhere to all safety standards and actively promote a culture of safety.
- Prior field experience in utilities, telecom, or related industries.
- Working knowledge of power poles, telecom equipment, fiber, and utility infrastructure.
- Familiarity with MS Office Suite; exposure to CAD drafting systems or GIS platforms preferred.
- Ability to work outdoors in varying conditions with a solid work history and commitment to reliability.
- Strong organizational, written, and verbal communication skills.
- Must have a personal vehicle (fleet vehicles may not always be available).
- Willingness to travel between job sites; occasional overnight travel may be required.
