Overview
Title: CUSTODIAN III
Reports To: Building Principal
Job Objective: Perform all custodial duties required for the routine care, protection, and preservation of the assigned school building, equipment, furnishings and grounds.
- High school diploma or equivalent technical/trade school training preferred.
- Evidence of a clear record as determined by the Bureau of Criminal Identification and Investigation (BCII) and Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI).
- Knowledge of custodial supplies and equipment.
- Knowledge and skill in housekeeping functions.
- Ability to understand and carry out verbal and written instructions.
- Ability to express important information to supervisors and administrators in writing.
- Ability to interpret and comply with OSHA and environmental issues requirements.
- Directly accountable to the building principal for all routine matters, and is under the general supervision of the Custodian I. Should the building Administrator or Director of Facilities determine that a matter warrants prompt attention, he/she may request/direct any building Custodian to address the matter.
- Perform housekeeping tasks (e.g., sweeping, mopping, and waxing floors; cleaning and sanitizing toilet rooms, locker rooms, and showers; emptying and sanitizing trash containers; resupplying toilet paper, feminine hygiene products, towels, and soap dispensers; emptying pencil sharpeners, removing cobwebs, cleaning windows and mirrors, cleaning chalkboards, dusting, cleaning and polishing furniture and woodwork, replacing inside light bulbs, etc.). Comply with district policies, procedures, and adopted performance objectives.
- Perform custodial activities needed to maintain safe and sanitary conditions. Provide for removal of trash. Enforce rules of good housekeeping.
- Interpret and comply with all Occupational Safety and Health Administration regulations and environmental issues compliance (e.g., blood borne pathogens exposure control plans, hazard communication standards program, asbestos abatement programs, etc.).
- Learn operation and maintenance procedures for all housekeeping equipment. Keep current with advances in equipment technology.
- Perform regular inspections of housekeeping equipment to ensure safe operating conditions. Report damaged equipment, building structures, plumbing, and/or electrical systems to the building principal and/or other appropriate personnel.
- Check daily to find out if evening and/or special activities require preparation.
- Turn off lights and secure the building at the end of the working day.
- Assist other custodians, when necessary.
- Monitor use and request necessary supplies. Assist with the safe storage of all housekeeping supplies, materials, and equipment.
- Make minor repairs to building, furniture, and equipment. Consult with the Custodian I about matters beyond the scope of the daily routine.
- Move and arrange furniture and equipment when required.
- Report discipline problems, vandalism, or other related concerns to the appropriate authority, as warranted.
- Initiate actions to protect the building during adverse weather conditions. Maintain clear routes for emergency egress to ensure the safe evacuation of the building.
- Arrange for opening, monitoring, protecting, and closing of the building during district events and activities, and during use of the building by outside groups, in the absence of the Custodian I.
- Remove snow, ice, and debris along all pedestrian routes to the building entrances, as directed.
- Help organize and provide general supervision of the summer cleaning crew. Consult with the Custodian I, when appropriate.
- Attend all mandatory meetings and training programs. Participates in professional growth activities, when requested.
- Maintain a clean, neat appearance and appropriate attire for work.
- Serve as a role model for students. Demonstrate responsibility, citizenship, respect, and courtesy.
- Perform other duties, as directed.
- Ability to lift, carry, or move supplies and equipment weighing up to fifty pounds.
- Ability to travel freely throughout the building.
- Ability to climb and work from step ladders, equipment that requires balancing skills.
- Ability to work in confined spaces or other areas that may require stooping, kneeling, crouching and crawling.
- Ability to handle and manipulate tools and objects that may be small and difficult to grasp or that are large and unwieldy.
- Ability to identify and express maintenance and custodial concerns and issues to district supervisors.
- Ability to react productively to frequent interruptions and changing conditions.
- Ability to organize and complete tasks efficiently with minimal supervision.
- Ability to work cooperatively with others.
- Ability to be punctual and maintain a good attendance record.
- Ability to work under stress and meet deadlines.
