Collins Aerospace in Wilson, NC is seeking an experienced Manufacturing Engineer to join our team for manufacturing complex fire suppression systems. This position is for a skilled engineer with knowledge and technical expertise in manufacturing and assembly of metal components, pressure systems, mechanical and electrical assemblies. This professional should be familiar with processes such as machining, welding, brazing, etch/laser marking, chemical treatment, and metal coatings.
This candidate must excel at critical thinking and problem solving while applying their engineering skills to solve complex issues while working under limited direction. This role will work as a cross-functional team member in close collaboration with design engineers, operations, and quality team members.
What You Will Do:
- Design, develop, and implement for manufacturing the required equipment, fixtures, tooling, gaging, processes or specifications for production. Such design and development may include new or revised processes.
- Identify and execute process and product improvements, as well as review of manufacturability of existing product in alignment with key process indicators (KPI's) such as yield, cost and scrap.
- Lead and implement continuous improvement initiatives of manufacturing equipment and processes in work cells utilizing lean principles such as: 5S Workplace Organization, Error Proofing, Total Productive Maintenance, Kanban/Pull Systems, Set-Up Reduction(SMED), Standard Work, Value Stream Mapping, and Visual Factory.
- Investigate new and existing technological advances in support of manufacturing processes.
- Develops/Conducts tests and measurements throughout stages of production to determine control over applicable variables; and services, troubleshoots and solves production process problems with processes or equipment already in operation.
- Follow compliance and lead change management for manufacturing processes that may include assembly, fabrication, marking, machining and welding.
- Support actions involving new capital equipment projects, such as writing capital funding requests, Statement of Work & Validation requirements; interface with vendors, contractors through release to production.
- Reviews and validates recommendations regarding manufacturability of existing and future products and advises modifications or adaptations to address quality, customer, product, or productivity constraints.
- Manage programs for production equipment such as etch or marking machines.
- Works with EH&S to identify and resolve ergonomic and other safety concerns specific to equipment and tools.
- Serve as a key member for Material Review Board (MRB) to oversee relevant product/material non-conformance disposition for repair, rework, or scrap to include writing procedures for repair or rework.
- Lead the team in PFMEA expansion reviews and updates for products.
- Provide guidance to technicians, and operation team members.
- Exposure to every function of the production operations, at all levels of the site organizational structure (from manufacturing operator to Site Leader), in support of every OEM in the aviation industry. It is an ideal position to dive into the most interesting and impactful production technologies and the learning opportunities are limited solely by time, effort, and curiosity of the individual.
- Skills required to succeed in a highly matrixed organization - effective communication, accountability through influence and structural expectations, project management, Sales/Inventory/Operations Planning
- Gain or deepen hands-on experience with Six Sigma and Shainin RedX techniques and develop expertise in Lean Manufacturing
- Solid Works or other CAD proficiency
- Working knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite
- Previous Experience working as a member of a Material Review Board (MRB), preferably in Aerospace
- Typically requires a degree in Science, Technology, Engineering or Mathematics (STEM) and minimum 5 years prior relevant experience or an Advanced Degree in a related field
- Reading and understanding engineering drawings or technical documents using GD&T practices
- Demonstrated use of lean principles
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications, AutoCAD or Solid Works systems, Lab View
- Application of GD&T Drawing techniques for fixturing designs
- Working knowledge of electro mechanical assemblies and pressure vessels
- Experience of Military / Aerospace procedures, specifications, regulations, AS9100
- Process automation troubleshooting experience
- Familiarity with SAP
